Wisconsin Manages Changes, Has Big Goals

OK now we're cooking; the men's college season is up to temperature with most of the fall-centric conferences in action.

There are some interesting storylines this week.

The Badgers

You can't accuse Wisconsin of taking it easy in the preseason. The Badgers played Lindenwood-Belleville (and lost) and now hot Iowa Central Community College, a varsity program that has upended teams before. This is brave scheduling by the Madison coaches, and while losing could hurt the team in the rankings, it's all about preparing for the Big Ten season.

The Yellow Jackets

Last weekend was Rob Guiry's last game as head coach of American International. Former standout Corey Momsen is the interim head coach while the program looks for a replacement. Guiry has moved to Connecticut as his girlfriend has a new job. Guiry did a superb job given that he was expecting to be Josh Macy's assistant (and was) only to see Macy move to Lindenwood.

Though all of this, the AIC players, now in D1A in the Liberty Conference, have to take control of their own destiny. They are fortunate to have Nic Franklyn, one of the better leaders in college rugby, as their captain.

Navy

It's a new Naval Academy era with Scholz Award winner Connor McNerney now an assistant coach while he awaits his turn to try out at the Special Warfare Command in Coronado, CA (Navy SEAL). Last week, Navy shut out St. Bonaventure and head coach Gavin Hickie said he was pleased with the defensive effort, but added that this week's clash with Iona will be a difficult one.

"They will be really physical and defend really well, so we have to be better on attack," said Hickie.

The Notre Dames

Notre Dame College is at Penn State in a Rugby East opener that could be one of the conference deciders. The University of Notre Dame is now in D1A and hosting Davenport will be a good, and stern, test for the Fighting Irish.
