The West Coast Sevens confirmed its lineup of teams for this fall, and this is a superb chance for teams from California, Arizona, and Nevada to find out how the sevens season might go.

The West Coast series includes a warmup tournament at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on October 6, and then the big, two-day event at Treasure Island on October 20-21.

For UC Davis, head coach Andy Malpass's story is similar to that of many teams.

"I don't really know what we've got," he said. "We will work with a specific sevens squad, but in between the Cal Poly tournament and Treasure Island, we have a 15s game against Sac State. So with all of that I think we'll find out what we've got."

Dom Burke leads the squad. A No. 8 and flanker in 15s, he likely will be a prop in sevens, and he is expected to captain the Aggies this season. He is backed up by a talented group, including sophomore center Ian Slack, wing Bradley Maples, 15s flanker Cole March, and Jared Woosley, and Tarik Siniora.

Kevin Brookshire joined Davis last year and could be the lynchpin at halfback.

"The West Coast 7s competition level is very good and it showed us a lot," said Malpass. "We saw we could compete with Cal and we almost turned them over at Treasure Island. The standard's good so it shows us where the level is, which is good for us for the entire season."

Central Washington, which made the final in 2017, won't return, but Utah is there, along with Nevada-Reno, providing an injection of athleticism and something of a wild card. Here are the 16 teams slated to compete:

Arizona, Arizona State, Cal, UC Santa Cruz, Sacramento St, Santa Clara, UC Davis, USC, U. San Diego, Nevada-Reno, Utah, Stanford, UCLA, UCSB, and Cal Poly.

A 16th team will earn a spot at the October 6 event.
