UCF Women Punch Their Ticket To Quarterfinals

The Atlanta Harlequins reaped the benefit of being competitive in two opening Women’s Premier League losses and thumped the visiting Twin Cities Amazons 53-10 Saturday to improve to 1-2.

It’s a strong 1-2, with two additional bonus points giving the ‘Quins seven standings points — one point shy of what you’d get with two victories.

Atlanta was led by recent Central Florida captain Cortney Kuehl, who scored two tries from outside center, and two more from her midfield partner, Kaitlyn Broughton. It’s worth noting that UCF’s other co-captain, prop Julia Phillips, is also on the Atlanta team, and was on the bench this week. Both players have made an immediate impact upon joining the ‘Quins.

The Amazons got two tries from lock Shaena Sparrow, but that was all.

All-Blues Roll

The Berkeley All Blues are now 3-0 after beating Chicago North Shore 36-29. For North Shore, a close loss provides some reason for optimism, but the All Blues have been excellent. Berkeley got early tries from Serena Liu and Evan Hoese, and Kedra Davis later on stakes the team to a 19-5 lead. Chicago was a tough team to shake off and made it 19-17 before Davis went over for her second to give the Californians some breathing room. Hoese added two late for her hat trick and keep the All Blues ahead.

Merlin Magic

Chasing Berkeley in the Blue Conference is Glendale. The Merlins rebounded from their loss to San Diego last week with a 46-14 defeat of ORSU. Three tries late in the first half turned a 7-7 game into a 22-7 Glendale lead and the Merlins never looked back. Seven Merlins scored the eight tries, with only fullback Madison Slaught touching down twice. Half of the Glendale tries were scored by their impressive forward pack.

A Five-Spot From Levy

Meanwhile, in the Red Conference, New York kept ahead of Atlanta with a 44-24 defeat of the DC Furies. In the space of less than 30 minutes in the middle part of the game, New York took a 5-5 game and made it 27-5. Wing Sarah Levy scored five tries on the day. New York is now in a commanding position at 2-0.
