Everyone wants to identify the Pool of Death in any major sevens competition, and the Women's Club 7s Nationals is no different; Pool D isn't it, but it's close.

Several strong contenders are in Pool D, but the group doesn't really have a truly dominant team, which is why it's not really the Pool of Death more than a Pool of Serious Bodily Harm.

ARPTC Blue

American Rugby Pro Training Center has two separate and distinct teams in this competition. Both did enough to get here and were registered as separate teams all summer. Jess Wooden leads this group. Wooden played this past season for Harlequins in England. Being one of the very rare women professional players in American 15s rugby is something to be treasured, and she's quick, a good kicker, and a leader.

Leaders also are Sophie Pyrz and Abby Vestal, while Hallie and Jaynee Taufoou are athletic and playmakers. The squad has blossomed in the academy environment in Arkansas, and it could pay off.

Boston Rugby

Really, Boston spent time chasing New York, and not quite getting there. But the club did outstrip rival Beantown for a place at Nationals, so they've got to be happy about that.

They have no interest in just making up the numbers, however.

Key for Boston will be teamwork, especially on defense. The squad is not loaded with stars (at least in terms of the players being nationally recognized), but that's an asset, too. Stacey Markovich and Kristi Kirshe can play, that's for sure.

Metropolis Rugby

Chasing the Chicago Lions, Metropolis finished second in the Midwest, but it was a close-run thing. Libby Berg continues her progression from being a bonafide college star to being a club 7s powerhouse. Katana Howard is a superb talent. Ellie Fromstein is a halfback from Penn State has emerged as a talent. Garrett Bender, who played for the USA men's 7s team on the World Series circuit, is coaching the squad, and this is a group that can make it all the way.

Scion Sirens

Scion faltered once or twice this year, but with all the pieces in place, this team can win a championship. Runners-up in the New York 7s, the Sirens won Cape Fear and two Mid-Atlantic qualifiers, but not the third one. No matter, they're rested, have Nate Serevi, Alycia Washington, Flora Poole, Kiki Morgan, and quite possibly Ilona Maher (we'll see). This is a team that can crush you or burn you.
