Club 7s Tournaments: Who Clinched, Who Faltered

As outlined earlier this week on FloRugby, this weekend was an important one for clubs trying to qualify for USA Rugby's Club 7s National Championships August 11-12 in New York City.

Watch the USA Rugby Club 7s Nationals LIVE on FloRugby August 11-12

Here's how the key tournaments turned out:

Northeast

Old Blue hasn’t lost a men's sevens game yet and finished the Northeast Qualifier season with a perfect record and the #1 seed from that region.

Old Blue beat Mystic River in the final, but Mystic did enough to qualify - in fact the Boston-area club just needed to step on the field at the Saratoga 7s to confirm a spot. Getting 2nd just confirmed the #2 seed.

NYAC just needed to take the field in Saratoga as well, and did, making the semis and claiming the #3 seed.

In the women’s bracket, New York won for the third time in a row and Boston took 2nd and those two will be the two teams to the national championships.

Beantown missed out by two points in the standings.

Mid-Atlantic

Scion is the top women’s team from the Mid-Atlantic but didn’t win this weekend in Philadelphia. Instead, the DC Furies upset Scion in the final. That performance was enough to secure the #2 seed for DC. But Scion had already won two tournaments and 2nd place was enough for the #1 seed. NOVA took 3rd on Saturday, and from Mid-Atlantic.

Beltway defeated Schuylkill River for the third time out of four men’s qualifiers and outscored Schuylkill 85-79 in the series standings. Beltway goes to New York, and Schuylkill stays home.

Midwest

The Midwest men's competition isn’t over, but it’s close. Metropolis won a tournament for the third time in a row, and while the Minneapolis didn’t clinch 1st by beating the Chicago Lions 24-10 in the Forest City 7s, it did secure a place in New York.

The region plays its championships in two weeks in Milwaukee at the Lakefront 7s. These top two have been the best, but it comes down, now, to one event, with the finalists going to NYC.

It’s essentially the same story among the women. There’s the championship tournament left, and the Lions look to be the heavy favorites. Metropolis is seeded #2, but it was Chicago North Shore that made the final against the Lions this time around (and lost). Cincinnati hung in for 3rd and shouldn't be discounted. The top two go to nationals, and while the Chicago Lions are the favorites, there's a big race for that second spot.

Red River

American Pro Rugby Blue lost to American Pro Rugby White in the women's final in Norman, OK. Doesn’t really matter - those two finishing 1st and 2nd secured both a trip to nationals even with a tournament to go.

That tournament, the HARC 7s in Spring, TX will decide how it all shakes out for the men. New Orleans edged Dallas 12-7 to win in Norman and tie Dallas with ten standings points. Dallas is an automatic qualifier, so NOLA just has to show up in Houston to get the Red River seed - it’s just a case of figuring out whether it’s #1 (if New Orleans finishes ahead of Dallas) or #2 (if Dallas finishes ahead of New Orleans).

Frontier

Well, no one knows what's going on. Lightning forced the Heartland 7s to end early. There is still some discussion about how points will be awarded, but it looks as though Bulldog and Denver lead the roost among the men, and the KC Jazz are still tops among the women. Notable in the men's copetition was the absence of Peaks out of Utah, which could open the door for Kansas City.

Pacific North

It’s still all up in the air in Northern California and the Pacific Northwest.

Among the women, Life West defeated Berkeley, after giving up the lead and then finishing the game with three tries to win the Carlsberg 7s in Sunnyvale, CA. Thanks to that performance the Gladiatrix win Northern California and Berkeley is 2nd. Both will go to the Pacific North finals in Tacoma, WA July 28.

ORSU and WAC are fighting for tops in the PNW. It all comes down to who among those four will be the best. The top three from the finals in Tacoma will move on, making the 3rd-4th game more important than the final.

In the Men's bracket in NorCal, Olympic Club finished the pool play undefeated and clinched the #1 seed in playoffs. Life West and Sacramento Capitals rounded out the top three spots.

In the semis, Life West and Sacramento Capitals tied in regular time and go to sudden death overtime, where Life scored in the first minute (the Caps were down a man due to a yellow card).

In the other semi, OC beat SFGG on the last play of a back-and-forth game. Sac Caps took 3rd and in the final, Olympic Club took a 12-0 lead and extended that to 19-0. LIfe answered back by OC held on 24-12.

WAC and Boise are pushing from the PNW, but the finals in Tacoma produce only one qualifier for New York. It's a tougher chase, but still one that is wide open.

Pacific South

With OMBAC failing to make the semis in the Sunsplash 7s men's competition, it was down to Belmont Shore’s two teams, Santa Monica, and Oceanside. Belmont Shore Blue beat Santa Monica 21-12 to make the final, but that team had already clinched a spot at nationals thanks to the Western Open Qualifier.

Santa Monica was ensured of finishing ahead of Oceanside in the standings regardless after Belmont Shore Gold beat the Chiefs in the semis.

So … BS Blue ended up forfeiting the final to BS Gold, and that meant that BS Gold got 22 points, enough for 35 total, which bested Oceanside’s total. Belmont Shore Gold joins Belmont Shore Blue and Santa Monica in New York.

Among the women, the San Diego Surfers have already qualified.

So Here Is How It All Stands Right Now:

Women Club 7s Nationals Teams: Atlanta, Phoenix, San Diego, Scion, DC Furies, NOVA, Chicago Lions, New York, Boston, American Rugby Pro Blue, American Rugby Pro White

Probably Metropolis, KC Jazz

Top three out of WAC, ORSU, Berkeley, and Life West

Men Club 7s Nationals Teams: Atlanta, Dallas, Belmont Shore Blue, Belmont Shore Gold, Santa Monica, Old Blue, Mystic River, NYAC, Beltway Elite

Probably New Orleans, Bulldog, Denver, MEtropolis, Chicago Lions

Pacific North winner

And Kansas City or Peaks
