Club sevens championships qualification heats up this weekend with two open qualifiers.

The eight regions each have their own qualification seasons, most of which follow a points system to decide a champion. But that's not all. There are two open qualifiers, in which any team can enter and, if it wins that qualifier, will compete at nationals in August.

This weekend, the two open qualifiers are in action, with the Western event at Treasure Island in San Francisco, and the Eastern event in Leesburg, VA. Here's how they look:

Western Open

Four ranked teams are in this event with four others that are close to being ranked: #2 Belmont Shore, #7 Olympic Club, #9 Santa Monica, and #14 Westside Ronin out of Washington state are all pushing for that coveted championship.

SFGG, San Jose, East Bay (Old Gaels), and Life West also are in the mix. SFGG has recently added Lindenwood power-runner Wes White, who is a 15s No. 8 and should be effective at prop or hooker in sevens.

It's a tough competition to handicap because these teams come from different regions. However, Westside is packed with talent and speed, and has done well early on in Washington, while Olympic Club won this past weekend in San Jose, and Belmont Shore won in dominant fashion at OMBAC 7s. Those are your three favorites.

Shore has potentially added Jack Tracy and Visesioparapa Leasi is a Samoan U20 player who could explode this weekend.

 Eastern Open

Five ranked teams - Chicago Lions, Beltway Elite, Schuylkill River, Dallas, and NOVA - are in action along with three solid contenders in Optimus, Pittsburgh, and NOVA. Optimus (out of Georgia) and Pittsburgh are probably the two least know groups, while Beltway and Schuylkill have been trading wins and will have a big battle to see who comes out on top.

Dallas has performed well so far this summer, while the Lions are yet to really fire - but they've added Lindenwood star Deion Mikesell and Arkansas playmaker Jack Casey to the roster.

All of the ranked teams are ranked by FloRugby in the bottom half of the top 20. Dallas is at 12, Chicago at 13, Beltway and Schuylkill tied at 15, and NOVA at 20. But strong performances could well move them up.
