Don't get too caught up in the euphoria of the USA's 62-13 defeat of Russia on Saturday in Denver, said USA head coach Gary Gold.

While there is a lot of good news for the now 6-0 coach, he added following the Eagles' Summer Series opener, "We didn't hit our goals."

He wanted his team to be more professional and savvier and slow the ball down. Russia was able to get quick ball and create problems for the USA, especially on the edge.

"We spoke about it at halftime and the boys really bought into it and I think in the second half there was a significant improvement," Gold said.

The Eagles were able to shut down Russia and score 28 more points in the process. 

There's been much talk about the scrum, and Gold said before the game that he wasn't especially pleased with how the team scrummed in the Americas Rugby Championship. This was a little different on Saturday.

"The scrummage is a lottery," said the Eagles coach. "I thought it was good, [but] it's up and down. I think we scrummed pretty well and the highlight was when Hanco (Germishuys) went to hooker in the second half and we ended up getting a penalty from that."

In fact, the USA got a couple of penalties in the second half from the scrum. But, there was not-so-good news, too. Gold said he felt his team didn't finish off pushes at times, and the front-rowers were smacked around a bit. Olive Kilifi took a poke to the eye which wasn't much fun. James Hilterbrand got a bad shoulder injury, and Joe Taufete'e also hurt his shoulder—hence Germishuys hooking at the end of the game.

Looking ahead, you might be forgiven for expecting no changes in the lineup when the Eagles host Scotland this Saturday (8 PM CT) at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston. Gold himself had some positive things to say about just about every player.

"John Quill put in a tireless performance from a point of work rate; Joe Taufete'e got us across the gain line," he said. "I thought Samu Manoa was outstanding when he carried and he put in some massive hits. Bryce [Campbell] and Paul Lasike were very good. ... I don't think one guy had a bad game."

That doesn't mean, however, that there will be no changes. The injury question at front row remains exactly that, a question. Scotland, while a fit, physical team, might not be as massive as Russia, and as a result, Gold might look for a little more lateral movement at certain positions.

Training Tuesday, more than anything, will tell him what he needs to know.
