The USA finished 2-1 in pool play to make the Cup Quarterfinals, beating Spain in the last second of the game, but losing to France thanks to two second-half tries. Also finishing 2-1 - Canada.

The two North American teams are basically tied in the World Series with 44 points.Canada has the tiebreaker, but it doesn't matter now, as the two teams will face off Saturday at 9:08am Central Time live on FloRugby.

With Russia (43 points in the standings) playing in the Challenge bracket (for the bottom four teams), the winner of USA vs Canada will finish in 4th for the season, and the loser will be 5th.

Meanwhile, Australia and New Zealand are on a collision course each team won its pool. Australia has a four-point lead in the series, and so making the final will clinch the World Series title over New Zealand.

Cose Games For Eagles

The USA defeated Japan in the opener 24-19 in a game that wasn't really as close as the score indicates. The Eagles led 24-0 thanks to two tries from Ryan Carlyle and tries from Kristen Thomas and Naya Tapper. It wasn't until the second half that Japan got going, and the final try was scored when time was up.

Still, taking a lead and losing it turned out to be the story of the day. Up 14-0 against Spain, the Eagles let Spain get back in the game. Then, with time almost up, the USA ran a nifty lineout move designed to put Tapper in at the corner. The Spanish defense held, and eventually, with the clock down to zeroes, Spain got a penalty.

The Lions could have ended the game right there, but opted to kick for a lineout, and try for that game-winning try. But some solid USA defense, a superb counter-ruck from Alev Kelter, and an alert steal from Nicole Heavirland saw the captain in under the posts to win it 21-14.

No such luck against France. The USA led early on a long-range run from Lauren Doyle, and held onto it thanks to a superb tackle and poach from Kelter. But the French battered the USA in the second half, pinning the Americans in their own 22. France score two, including one right at the death, to win 14-5.

Quarterfinal Matchups

New Zealand takes on Spain, the USA faces Canada, Australia plays Fiji, and France takes on England in the Cup Quarterfinals.

With the results so far, Spain should bypass Russia for 6th in the World Series, while England could have its best showing of the season.
