The USA defeated Russia and Japan, and finished 2-1 on Day One at the Canada Women's Sevens in Langford, BC to make the Cup Quarterfinals.

The Eagles slammed Russia 35-14 to open the day, taking a 35-0 lead with five tries from five different players - all converted by Alev Kelter. 

Russia won the second half 14-0, but it didn't really matter at that point.

From a high to a low, though, as the Eagles were edged in the closing seconds by the amazing Jade Le Pesq of France. Her try with time essentially up won it 22-19 for France and ruined a comeback for the Americans. France had led 15-5 before tries from Naya Tapper and Kelter made it 19-15. 

But in the final game of the day, the Eagles little trouble with japan 28-7. Tapper scored twi and Abby Gustatis and Cheta Emba also touched down. Kelter and Nicole Heavirland completed a 11-12 day on conversions.

France, Australia, and New Zealand all went 3-0, while Fiji and Canada joined the USA at 2-1. England and Ireland were the two best third-place teams.

The Eagles will take on Canada in the quarterfinals 12:04pm Pacific Time.

Getting to the quarters is important for the Eagles, who have to work for it to get higher than 7th in the World Series standings. They're got an excellent chance at catching Spain and Canada, if they beat Canada on Sunday.
