Mount Saint Mary's notched a 29-10 victory over James Madison to win the Chesapeake Conference 7s Championships on Saturday in Emmitsburg, MD.

The Mountaineers have already committed to playing in the CRC Invitational in Chester, PA, in early June and therefore likely won't also go to USA Rugby's 7s championships in Glendale, CO, in May. That means the Chesapeake Conference spot is now up for grabs to an at-large applicant.

The tournament was held at Echo Field on the Mount Saint Mary's campus, and James Madison went in as the No. 1 seed after garnering the most points during the Chesapeake Conference series.

In the championship event, JMU started well and beat Virginia and Mary Washington comfortably to win Pool A. Maryland beat Salisbury 31-17 and Virginia Tech 19-12 to squeeze out a win in Pool B, while MSM dropped Georgetown (38-5) and Towson (24-10) to go 2-0 in Pool C.

The top two pool winners (JMU and Mount Saint Mary's) got a bye to the semis. The third-ranked pool winner (Maryland) had to play in, as did the three second-place teams. Maryland beat Virginia to advance, and Virginia Tech defeated Georgetown.

In the semis, JMU edged Maryland 17-14, while the Mount's game was even closer, 14-12 over Virginia Tech.

But in the final, the Mount produced its best performance at a crucial moment, playing strong defense as a unit and also individually to beat the Dukes 29-10.

Virginia Tech took third place over Maryland. Georgetown beat Virginia for fifth, and Towson took seventh over Salisbury.
