D1A Quarterfinals: Army Poses Life's Toughest Test
Life hosts Army in the D1A quarters.

There's a bit of a buzz going around D1A rugby, and it's about those birds that can't fly.
Or maybe they just choose not to fly, like a life choice. Regardless, the second-seeded Life Running Eagles have only had a couple of close games this season, and it's possible this Saturday's D1A quarterfinal clash against No. 10 seed Army in Marietta, GA, will be the toughest yet.

The Running Eagles make it happen thanks to a hard-nosed tight five led by the redoubtable Alex Maughan and imposing Mike Islava. But the way they find separation is in the backs. Mitch Wilson leads a backline that works nicely together and identifies holes in the defense en masse. The result is usually a flood of tries.
Facing Life is an Army team that has already battled through some tough games, including a close loss to Cal, a narrow victory over Navy, and a one-point defeat to Penn State. Following that gauntlet, Army's 52-15 road win over Colorado State in the round of 16 last weekend was almost relaxing. Lock Mitch Sanderson was a try-scoring machine against the Rams, and superb outside back Jake Lachina also proved he can beat you multiple ways.
"The Rugby East is a very good conference, as you can see by some of the playoff results," West Point head coach Matt Sherman said. "We've worked hard to get ourselves playing our best rugby right now."
While Life head coach Colton Cariaga may be warning his team to not get too excited about its accomplishing, it's hard to ignore the Running Eagles' dominance: 14 wins and no losses; only two games (a 22-18 win over Lindenwood, 22-18; a 36-31 victory against NY Athletic Club men) that can be described as especially close; six winning margins over 60.
Life and Army have played two common opponents, Navy and Penn State. The Black Knights beat Navy by three points and lost to PSU by a point, twice. Life beat Navy 30-0 and Penn State 51-34.
