Cal vs Saint Mary's could well end up moving the D1A playoff seedings, but Cal head coach Jack Clark says it's more about the rivalry.

“For as long as I’ve been at Cal, as a player or coach, this has been a fun match to look forward to," Clark told FloRugby. “They are a good team in all phases of the game. We’ve been playing competitive matches with them since the 1970s.”

Clark said pretty much the entire Saint Mary's 1st side is a group of players to worry about, and anyway the coach had his own team to worry about and put together. Early on in the season there were questions around flyhalf and especially lock, questions that seem to have found answers.

Clark said answering those questions was a normal challenge for a college team.

"In 2017, we graduated 14 players, to include six starters and some key reserves, and of course the loss of starting lock Robert Paylor," said Clark. "We had plenty of questions heading into this season but have mostly filled out the roster with competent performers.“

But, he added, the Bears, while perhaps nicely placed to win this game and garner a #1 or #2 ranking as a result, aren't a finished product.

“I’m not sure we are excelling in any one area, but we’re good-ish in most parts of the game," said Clark. "We have been playing pretty quick, both in phase play and in how we restart play in transition. Not exactly an attribute for a heavy field like we will have in Moraga but we’re likely to have some fast tracks down the road.”
