This past weekend’s Cal Invitational included an emotional moment for Cal fans and players as Robert Paylor returned to the rugby field to watch his college team play.

Paylor suffered a catastrophic spinal injury in the Varsity Cup final last May and has been paralyzed ever since. While Paylor has been working enormously hard to come back from the injury, the road will be long and arduous.

Paylor, who played his high school rugby at Jesuit in Sacramento and was tabbed as a rising start in the game, arrived in Berkeley, CA, to cheer on the Bears as they played UCLA on Saturday.

"This is such a special day for me. There are so many people I want to thank," Paylor said during a sideline interview with Pac-12 Networks. "It was very emotional to see them out there on that field. I wish I could be out there with them. I'm determined to get out of this chair. I might not be back on that field with them, but I will be back at Berkeley soon."

Paylor has been accepted into the Haas School of Business and is expected to return to campus full-time in the fall to continue his pursuit of an undergraduate degree at Cal in business administration.

"It was the most inspirational thing we could have had today, seeing him back where he deserves to be," Bears center Matt Ternan said.

Cal head coach Jack Clark told FloRugby, “It was very emotional for all of us. We’re proud of Robert and his being accepted into the business school is an accomplishment in itself. I think the team felt the emotion of the moment. I think everyone did.”

The support from Cal rugby, said Paylor in the interview, “is why I’m doing so well.”
