The Red River Conference has seen both its playoff picture and future membership become a little clearer in an important last few days for the league.

With the two divisions looking to each send a team to the final in April, victories by LSU and Texas A&M over the weekend set up a nice climax to the winter. The conference also announced that North Texas would join the Red River next season.

Red River North

Baylor didn't get a chance to make much of a statement against Arkansas on Saturday, as the game was called off due to weather. However, the Bears (5-1 RRRC) have pretty much sewn up the top spot in the North, even with a 40-29 loss to Oklahoma in Norman on Feb. 17.

Red River South

Wing Ruben Mikeska scored two early tries as Texas A&M rolled over Houston 44-10 on Saturday to move to 4-1. Meanwhile, LSU put on an impressive performance a week after beating A&M, taking down Texas 63-29. Lock Dylan Stephens and wing Aidan Elias both scored twice and Brennan Falcon was a monster at No. 8, getting player-of-the-game honors.

Robert Hughes scored two for UT, but LSU's points haul has put everyone on notice.

The Tigers needed to play this game after the fixture with Texas was called off due to snow, forcing a rescheduling of class in Baton Rouge, LA. Missing the game would have meant missing out on points in the standings. Now it all comes down to this coming Saturday's meeting with A&M to decide who is the likely Red River South winner.

UPDATED RRRC SCORES & STANDINGS

Expansion

The Red River Conference has endured a lopsided alignment for a couple of years and needs a 10th team to even things out. For many, North Texas was the logical choice.

The Mean Green have shown well in some out-of-region games and have been lobbying hard to get a conference to play-in spot.

North Texas head coach Michael Engelbrecht said the RRRC's decision was the culmination of a lot of hard work in getting the team in good standing with the school and with the conference.

The move means there will be a five-team North and a five-team South, and will make scheduling that much easier. It also is a good move for UNT, which has had no conference to play in for several years.
