Santa Monica is looking to bring an improved and athletic side to its first-round game in the Pacific Rugby Premiership this Saturday in San Francisco.
After opening the year with a loss to Belmont Shore, Santa Monica is looking to bring an improved and athletic side to its first-round game in the Pacific Rugby Premiership this Saturday in San Francisco.
It’s no secret that Santa Monica is usually a smaller outfit and won’t win by steamrolling other teams. The Dolphins have to rely on execution on offense and outworking other teams on defense — their mindset is all about teamwork.
“We’re going to have really challenging games every week, but that’s why we play rugby,” said Chaput, the club's vice president and a former UCLA standout. “We’re lucky to have these teams in the PRP, but we also know we have to have a strong core of players.”

Depth is perhaps an issue for the Dolphins — enough that Santa Monica’s second side has moved to D3, thus allowing a larger cadre of first-siders to concentrate on the Premiership.
“All of us train together and the D3 guys are as important as the D1 guys, but it’s a good move for us,” said Chaput, the club's vice president and a former UCLA standout. “We have some good players — we’ll see how they do.”
Chaput will play this weekend against Life West, and he will likely have the services of another French-born UCLA product in the imposing Pierre Courpron. Former USA U20 back Quinn Perry has joined the Dolphins but has some work to do perhaps to break past the more experienced players.
However, the biggest addition may well have been Scottish rugby legend Scott Murray.

Murray won 87 caps for Scotland and was a multiple-time Scottish Player of the Year. The former lock will bring a knowledge of the rougher side of the game to a Santa Monica team that will likely need it.
