How's this for a freshman performance: One player scored 45 points to lead his team to a win over the weekend.

Scoring a combination of four tries and 13 conversions, Matt Grundlingh of the Claremont Colleges racked up almost half of his squad's points in a 104-12 defeat of Loyola Marymount this past Saturday.

They weren't gimme points either, as Grundlingh had to show a combination of speed, elusiveness, and field awareness to get the job done. Grundlingh is a South African who attended grammar school in Singapore, took a gap year, and is now enrolled at Claremont McKenna, one of the schools in the Claremont Colleges consortium.

The Lions play their regular season in the Gold Coast D1 Conference but move on in the postseason to the National Small College Rugby Organization (NSCRO) playoffs, of which Claremont is the reigning national champion.
