Grand Canyon pulled off a bit of a shocker in D1A with a 22-18 road win over San Diego State on Saturday.

GCU went into the game ranked No. 28 among D1A teams by FloRugby, and San Diego State was No. 15. Among all D1A voters, SD State stood No. 10 in the polls, while GCU could not crack the top 20.

But the 'Lopes did enough on Saturday, taking an early lead before trailing 10-3 going into halftime, thanks in part to a yellow card against Grand Canyon.

But in the second half, GCU drew even following a break from Maceo Brown and a try from Dominic Iacovino to finish it off. San Diego State replied with a try from freshman Jake Vassar and a penalty from Harrison Barkham to pull ahead 18-10. But then two tries in the space of four minutes — from Brendon Curle and lock Cameron Dosbon, with Avery Longrie converting one — put GCU up 22-18.

From there it was all about defense, as the Aztecs failed to break through, despite finishing the last 10 minutes up a man after another yellow card on the 'Lopes.
