Old Mission Beach Athletic Club is returning to the Pacific Rugby Premiership for a new season and does so with a much-changed side from last year.

The storied San Diego club has already produced some good results in a series of preseason games and has two more on the slate before the first weekend of the PRP.

Three triple-header weekends (Feb. 10, March 31, and May 6) of the PRP are streaming LIVE on FloRugby this season.

“If you compare our team that competed in last year’s California Cup and the team in the D1 season, and they are very different,” OMBAC coach and GM Jason Wood said. "[This year’s team is] a bit short of the team that competed in the Cal Cup, but we’re probably past where we are with the team that competed in D1.”

Several players have moved on from the squad including Todd Clever, who was on loan from the MLR's Austin Elite for the Cal Cup. Some Australian-based players went back home. Zach Pangelinan moved to Houston and signed with the Sabercats after close to 10 years in San Diego. Kalei Konrad is now in Ireland.

But three players from the Eastwood club in Australia will join OMBAC soon, and Wood said that a couple more unexpected talents from overseas, “who showed up out of nowhere,” have augmented the team.

Longtime front-rower Jamie Purcell is back after playing at Randwick in Australia and is also looking really solid, according to Wood.

Some younger additions are coming in to the club from local colleges, too, and there are plenty of familiar faces, including lock Derrick Broussard, back Damien Fatongia, back Christopher Bergquist-Turori, and capped wing Tim Stanfill. Former Saint Mary’s standout Garrett Brewer is looking to get time at flyhalf as well.

Perhaps the biggest move in the club is in coaching, as Wood has taken a bit of a step back and former USA lock Tai Tuisamoa has moved into a player-coach role. Combined with the revitalization of the PRP, Tuisamoa's new approach and OMBAC's player turnover appear to be the start of a new chapter for a club that already has a long story to tell.
