Reports: Wales, South Africa Eyeing Test Match In Washington D.C.

Reports are that Wales and South Africa are going to play each other in a full test match in Washington D.C. this year.

Sources in Wales and South Africa are saying this will happen on June 2. The venue has not been named, although RFK Stadium, which hosts the DC United Major League Soccer team, seems like a logical choice.

The Daily Mail was the first to report the details of the possible matchup, and did so in passing, noting that the Welsh kit manufacturer, Under Armour, is headquartered in Baltimore, and so a game in D.C. might be a nice tie-in.

Wales is set to tour Argentina in June but has had trouble confirming venues, making planning difficult. Both Wales and South Africa are looking for a warmup match before the Northern Hemisphere summer.

This is the latest in a series of U.S.-based major test matches that have been rumored. Some, like a New Zealand vs. Australia clash in Denver, never happened. Some, like New Zealand vs. Ireland in Chicago, were held and were a huge success.

The All Blacks have sold out Soldier Field in Chicago twice, once in 2014 when they played the USA and in 2016 when they played (and lost to) Ireland. Australia also played the USA at Soldier Field, but desultory marketing efforts meant the attendance was only a third of the USA-New Zealand game the year before.

Pro 14 and the Aviva Premiership have held games in the USA, and on February 3 the Bulls and the Stormers of Super Rugby will play as part of a double-header with the USA vs. Argentina XV ARC game at the StubHub Center in Carson, CA.

A game in D.C. will have to rely heavily on a robust expat population to come out to see some international rugby. However, it all starts with the sponsor.

The All Blacks' visits in 2014 and 2016 and Australia's visit in 2015 were heavily underwritten by major sponsors (AIG for the All Blacks and Astellas for Australia). Likewise, back in 2008 Clermont-Auvergne’s game against the USA in Charleston, SC, was underwritten by Michelin, whose North America headquarters are in Greenville, SC. Under Armour will likely be a major participant in this rumored D.C. game.
