Arizona Battle Highlights This Weekend In College Rugby

Men's college teams have some work to do to get going after the winter break, and it starts this weekend.

The Storer Classic dominates the schedule, somewhat, as it brings six teams together for one tournament on the campus of UCLA on Saturday. It's not quite a foregone conclusion that Cal will win it... OK, it is, but the Bears have been pushed at times at the Storer, and UC Davis has started well and could be the team to do it.

The tournament may prove to be a tough day for UC Santa Cruz, UC Irvine, and even UC San Diego, but they will benefit greatly from playing fast-paced, physical teams... as long as they stay healthy.

Also on the slate for Saturday is Saint Mary's road trip to Santa Clara for a California Conference game. And while SCU is looking to make a run at a D1A playoff spot, getting by the already battle-hardened Gaels will be a tall order.

The one-off game to really watch is a matchup between Arizona and Grand Canyon on Friday in Phoenix. GCU has been building its varsity program for some time and struggled to find regular opposition because the school is relatively isolated, in rugby terms.

Now a D1A team, Grand Canyon is playing an independent schedule that has filled out well enough, with Arizona, San Diego State, BYU, Arizona State, Utah, UC Davis, Santa Clara, and Cal Poly. It's a ranker's dream because the 'Lopes cross through three conferences, plus one independent.

Under head coach Cameron Wyper, Grand Canyon has a huge roster (77) of heavily recruited players, with 41 of them freshmen or sophomores. Upperclassmen players such as Ricky Wisdom, Darien Pickett, and Connor Fischman have emerged as leaders, but watch out for the likes of Brendon Curle, Roddy Hamilton, and former High School All-American Suwaiter Poch.

Arizona Captain Kyle Rogers Isn't Satisfied

Arizona, too, has a large roster and a strong recruiting class. After a very good fall sevens season, the Wildcats hope to leverage some freshman talent such as Jon Rogers (Granite Bay - CA), George Niethammer (Jesuit - CA), and Alex Rayton (The Woodlands - Texas), and there is an excellent chance of seeing lock/flanker Bronson Teles and flanker Zach Heisterkamp break out as sophomores.

Still, Arizona's road to success goes through the hands of Rogers' older brothers, Kyle and Matt, in the backs and Steven Branham and Sean Coleman up front.
