USA, Australia 3-0 In Silicon Valley 7s
USA and Australia went 3-0 on Day One of the Silicon Valley 7s
The USA and Australia went 3-0 and finished the day unscored upon to open the Silicon Valley 7s in Santa Clara, CA, on Saturday.
The tournament, an international event designed as a warmup for the HSBC World Series, produced more than a few surprise results and attracted a surprisingly large crowd despite the rain.
Among the surprises was Chile's 7-0 defeat of New Zealand in Pool C, and in fact New Zealand lost to the USA, too, and needed a big victory in the final round to avoid missing the quarterfinals.
As it was, New Zealand is the No. 8 seed and plays Australia in the first knockout game for both on Sunday.
For the USA, Stephen Tomasin sparked a 29-7 comeback win against Tonga with four tries. In the Americans' second game, New Zealand took a 12-0 lead, but some nifty footwork from Folau Niua and strong leadership from Ben Pinkelman brought the USA back. Joe Schroeder stretched his 6-foot-5 frame over the line for the go-ahead try, and Martin Iosefo sidestepped his way to one of the tries of the day.
Everything, then, came down to the final round. With the top eight being seeded Nos. 1-8 for the quarterfinals, the matchups weren't all confirmed until the last game was done.
That was USA against Chile, and, oddly, the winner would face No. 7 Fiji in the quarters, while the loser would get No. 5 Japan. Maka Unufe took Chile apart early and late, and while the Condors did mount a bit of a comeback, the Eagles took the win 29-21.
Samoa needed a late try to drop Canada 19-12 in the final round to win Pool A. England was fortunate to come away with a 1-1-1 record, while Ireland almost made the quarters but just missed out.
