The first round of the Silicon Valley 7s this weekend at Avaya Stadium in Santa Clara, CA, is in the books, and we've already seen a monumental upset.

In Pool C, Chile held on with a goal-line stand at the end to defeat mighty New Zealand 7-0 on Saturday. As you might expect, the Condors were ecstatic after the victory. In the wet conditions, New Zealand was just not polished and made several early-season mistakes.

Canada also upset England 19-10 in both teams’ Pool A opener.

For Canadian captain John Moonlight, this was just the first step in getting back to the higher levels.

"England is a development team, but they've played together — they've had games,” Moonlight said. “So for us to come out and come together after 20 weeks of training together and to beat them, we're pretty happy.”

Also in Pool A, Ireland, not normally a big-time 7s team, almost upset Samoa before falling 10-5 loss.

For the most part, tries were tough to come by in the first round, with cold rain early in the day making ball-handling difficult.

Japan had no such difficulties in its first matchup in Pool B, exposing China's somewhat fractured defensive line to the tune of 47-0. Australia took apart a rather dissolute-looking Fijian team 29-0.

And the USA ended the first round in Pool C by pulling away in the second half to beat Tonga 29-7. After the Americans fell behind 7-0, Stephen Tomasin led the charge with four tries and, more than that, put a sense of urgency and aggression into the USA effort.

"We talked at halftime it was about just holding onto the ball,” Tomasin said. “We're not looking for offloads. We're just carrying the ball hard.”
