The question about what, as well as which teams, we should rank continues to chase us in FloRugby's All-D1 Men's College Rankings.
Should a game in which a team selected down, or was forced to because of injuries, be counted less than any other game? Should a team that loses in a tough conference get credit for playing against challenging competition? Does one really good result negate every other result? Does one bad result throw out the rest of a team's season?
There is no set answer. Sometimes a result can be an indicator of something ... sometimes not.
A week ago saw Wheeling Jesuit enter the rankings after beating Notre Dame College by two points. But WJU wasn't put ahead of NDC because the Falcons have a better overall record this season.
And then this past weekend, WJU lost by 56 to Kutztown. So in the totality of results, Wheeling Jesuit still has a ways to go.
Then there's the Texas versus Baylor game. It wasn't a league matchup but more of a conference tune-up. However, nobody was saying this was a scrimmage or practice game or anything of the sort. BU's coaches said they ran out a strong team and just didn't play well. So that's a little easier... The Longhorns come in and the Bears drop somewhat.
Then there's the question of teams that play in very difficult conferences but haven't won a lot. Certainly there's a case to be made that, say, St. Bonaventure, Michigan State, or Utah State might be better than the top team in another conference. Sometimes we make that determination; sometimes we need more evidence.
Should Colorado come into the top 50 after beating Air Force 49-41? Well, maybe, but Colorado lost to Utah State, which lost big to Air Force. We're feeling a little on the fence about all of it. Maybe they should all be ranked. Maybe none should be.
We bumped Air Force down, kept Colorado out, and dropped out Alabama and Wheeling Jesuit. However, we kept in Ohio and Louisville and brought in Texas.
Western Michigan moves up and goes past Bowling Green (who beat WMU earlier) because BGSU has been struggling and WMU has not.
There's always a reason.
