The USA Selects take on Samoa A on Saturday in Montevideo, Uruguay, and while this is a non-test international competition, it still matters.

Selects head coach Scott Lawrence told FloRugby earlier this week that he wants to win but is also concerned about developing players to make the full Eagles squad in November -- and for 2018.

This is a team with several young prospects -- Ruben de Haas is just out of high school, for example -- and also players who were in the USA system and took a break because of injury, school, or were just out of favor.

Those players include Chicago Lions (and former Davenport) prop Angus MacLellan, Glendale Raptors (and former UW-Whitewater) lock Ben Landry, SFGG (and former Cal) lock/flanker Brendan Daly, OMBAC wing/fullback/flyhalf Zach Pangelinan (who has been on and off the radar for 10 years), Seattle Saracens (and former Central Washington) flanker Aladdin Schirmer, SFGG center Moto Filikitonga, and Trinity (and former Saint Mary’s) wing Tim Maupin (pictured above).

Captain Peter Malcolm, who was captain of Wheeling Jesuit and is now with Austin Elite, likes what he sees from this Selects squad.

“The players seem to be coming along nicely,” he told FloRugby. “It’s been pretty nonstop since we got in, but everyone has caught up on systems and all that and seems to be where he needs to be.”

Malcolm is one of 13 capped players on tour. That list includes Alex Maughan, Patrick Ryan, MacLellan (like Malcolm, all front-rowers), Matt Jensen, Schirmer, Filikitonga, Hanco Germishuys, Ben Cima, Bryce Campbell, Pangelinan, Maupin, and JP Eloff.

But there are several uncapped players, too. Watch out for BYU hooker Alex Vorster, who could make a splash. Holden Yungert and de Haas will have a nice battle at scrumhalf, and many eyes will be on the very green Psalm Wooching, who has tons of potential.

“The biggest thing for us to show is just desire,” Malcolm said. “We want to get off the line in defense and get into shape and carry hard on attack.”
