College Rundown: Penn State, OSU, SCRC Teams, And More

Colleen McCloskey

Penn State notched two victories against Ivy League opposition this weekend, and it was the youngsters who led the way.

Freshman Luke O'Malley was player of the game as the Nittany Lions defeated Harvard 113-0 on Friday. And then on Saturday, Penn State defeated Dartmouth 55-23, led by four tries from Brian Stella, who was a top player for Doylestown (PA) High School last season. Stella also put his body on the line to keep a Mike Dabulas kick in the field of play, allowing Ryan McNulty to score. Stella was named player of the game.

"It was a good team effort overall," PSU head coach Justin Hundley said. "The leaders were great. Even when things went wrong they were composed and stuck to the systems. The forwards were great in setting up a solid platform all day, and Brian Stella had an overall strong performance."

Stella mostly played center in high school but was on the wing for Penn State and seemed to enjoy himself.

On Saturday, Ohio State defeated Oklahoma 46-10 at home in a non-conference meeting on the same day as the two schools battled in football. OSU's scrums showed much improvement from their struggles against Bowling Green.

"We still had some basic handling mistakes, but we were better, overall," OSU head coach Tom Rooney said.

Sophomore center Andrew Baldado continues to play well, and sophomore lock Nate Heister led from the front.

Chris Kelley, Ronan Forrestal, and Nate Tayor showcased some nice interplay and teamwork, and those three accounted for six tries among them.

Mary Washington laid down a bit of a marker with a 50-5 defeat of Towson University in Chesapeake Conference league play.

St. Bonaventure trailed early in its 32-7 win over New England College, but Francisco Hereñu scored four tries to help SBU surge ahead. Hereñu scored his third for a 15-7 advantage at the break, and he added his fourth for a 20-7 lead before tries from Matt Bergstol and Pat McCormack finished NEC off.

Colgate took the annual rivalry game with Cornell in style 38-5. Ben Moore scored two, and Andrew Jahns Billy Bingo, Will Baker, and Adrian Heath also notched tries.
