The international 15s season for the USA is not especially busy this fall, but it does include three important events.
But things are a little better now, and the USA Selects squad that goes to the 2017 APC will be pretty young. There will be capped players on the squad, most likely but not a lot. What you will see are players just out of college, along with one or two players who sort of drifted away from the international level only to get sucked back into the fold.
The USA is slated to face Samoa A, Canada A, and Uruguay A in October.
And one more thing about the Americas Pacific Challenge -- don't read anything into who's coaching the team. From what we've been able to figure out, the APC will NOT be an audition for the full Eagles head coaching job.
1. Eagles Head Coach To Be Named Later
This individual has not been named yet, and as we at FloRugby understand it, the process has been a bit more drawn out than anyone wanted. Why is that? Part of it has to do with money. Not that long ago we were wringing our hands at the prospect of paying a coach six figures. Then the magic number seemed to be $200,000 annually. International head coaching pay continues to rise, and at the same time USA Rugby's discretionary income is not. So we'll see what USA Rugby can get for its buck -- certainly there will be an in-country coaching/player development aspect.2. Fall Tour
The Eagles head abroad to play Germany and Georgia in November. It's not a lot, but could be a little scary if Germany continues its good run of form when it hosts the USA on Nov. 18 in Frankfurt. A week later, the Eagles travel to play Georgia in Tbilisi. The good news is that some overseas pros who were injured are getting healthy, and they should be available for these games. More on this later.3. The Americas Pacific Challenge
So this is what the Americas Rugby Challenge used to be. The Americas Pacific Challenge is a competition for teams just below test-match level. For years, the USA has been involved in similar competitions and has, for one reason or another, kind of been forced into running out what is very close to a full USA national team. But things are a little better now, and the USA Selects squad that goes to the 2017 APC will be pretty young. There will be capped players on the squad, most likely but not a lot. What you will see are players just out of college, along with one or two players who sort of drifted away from the international level only to get sucked back into the fold.
