The formula worked nicely all weekend for Seattle Atavus, as Megan Sanders, Erica Legaspi, and Anne Peterson helped lead their team to a 26-14 win over the San Diego Surfers in the title game of the Women's Club 7s Championships on Sunday in Blaine, MN.
With Sanders slicing defenses and setting up teammates, Peterson kicking beautifully and making key plays, and Legaspi coming up with that crucial try around the outside, Seattle overcame a yellow card and a tough San Diego Surfers team to take the title. San Diego, in fact, led early thanks to a pair of tries from Kelsi Stockert, including a penalty try in which Megan Foster was on her way to score before being tackled illegally.
Legaspi got one back and made a key defensive stop later (interestingly, Legaspi and Stockert were rugby teammates in high school in Olympia, WA), but as time went on the entire Seattle team just looked the stronger. Jennine Duncan and Lauren Barber scored second-half tries, and Seattle Atavus took the title.
It was a highly competitive tournament overall. Seattle needed two tries from Duncan to hold off Life West in the semifinals. San Diego needed two Megan Foster tries to get by Scion.
All of the quarterfinal games were close.
Legaspi and Stockert scored six tries on the weekend, while Emily Roskopf of Life West scored seven, including the lone try in the third-place game. Peterson and Foster both scored 35 points over the course of the tournament.
Life West took third over Scion behind a 5-0 win (Roskopf's seventh try). New York earned the Plate (fifth) with a victory over American Pro Rugby 7s.
