Varsity Cup Quarterfinals: Navy Edges Central Washington In OT Thriller

Navy 27, Central Washington 24

The Penn Mutual Varsity Cup saw the first overtime match in the history of the competition on Saturday, as Navy shut down Central Washington in the extra period to move on to the semifinal round with a 27-24 win.

The Midshipmen trailed 14-7 at halftime and never led in regulation against the Wildcats, who entered the quarterfinals with a first-round bye. After kicking the winning penalty, Navy may have been just as surprised as Central Washington to see the Midshipmen move on to the semifinals next week at Arkansas State.

Penn State 47, Army 34

In a back and forth game, Penn State ended up getting the best of a strong Army squad to launch the Nittany Lions into the semifinals.

"We took our foot off the gas a little, and they really fought back into it to make it interesting," Penn State coach James Willocks said. "They kept battling back, but we responded each time."

Army mounted a comeback to make the score 39-34, but a penalty along with a yellow card sealed the Black Kinghts' fate against a dominant PSU team.

Penn State travels to Cal for its semifinal matchup next week.

Arkansas State 39, Utah Valley 12

Arkansas State cruised to a comfortable win at home over Utah Valley to book its place in the semifinals. Although the host Red Wolves had concerns about UVU's size advantage -- Utah Valley upset UCLA last week -- Arkansas State's fitness proved to be too much for the visitors.

"We came out strong, which we do not usually do," ASU coach Shaun Potgeiter said. "We put them under pressure from right from the get go but did not get any points from it."

Arkansas State hosts the Naval Academy next week.

Cal 71, Clemson 5

After a tight opening 15 minutes, defending Varsity Cup champion Cal pulled away from Clemson with an onslaught of tries.

While the Bears built a 50-0 lead at halftime, the host Tigers showed some resolve by limiting Cal to one try in the final 20 minutes of the game.

The Bears host Penn State in the semifinals next week.

How do you punish an upset? Do you make the assumption that the losing team selected down and didn't have its top players? Or do you immediately assume that both squads had their best lineup and punish the loser.
