5 Celebrities You May Not Have Known Are Ruggers

As one of the most popular sports in the world, rugby has no shortage of celebrities, politicians, and interesting people who have enjoyed the game. However, some of the names of these ruggers might surprise you...

1. Bill Clinton

Clinton played prop and lock while attending Oxford University in England. Clinton has been quoted as saying, "Being an American I didn't know much about the game, but I was the biggest guy on the team and my coach said, 'Clinton, go out there and get in someone's way.'"

2. George W. Bush

Back in his heyday, George W. was an athlete. He played for Yale University as a fullback and is remembered by his teammates as being a reliable and tough competitor. There is also a controversial photo of Bush floating around on the internet that shows him punching an opponent in the face during a particularly hard-fought match.

3. Mark Cuban

null

There are more than a few photos of Cuban from his college days that capture the debauchery that was the Indiana University rugby team. While we are unsure of what position he actually played with the Hoosiers, there is an interview of Cuban saying that his favorite thing about rugby aside from his lifelong friendships is hitting people and getting hit.

4. Daniel Craig

Yes, that's right. Mr. 007 himself played rugby while in primary school for Hoylake RFC. Is there any better training to become James Bond than play rugby? I think not. Back in 2015, there was a bid to get Daniel Craig and Russell Crowe out onto the pitch for a charity tournament. However, that idea was quickly snuffed out by the actors' insurers in order to avoid any appearance-altering injuries.

5. Russell Crowe

Starring in movies such as "Gladiator," "American Gangster," and "Robin Hood," to name a few, Russell Crowe is no stranger to action and violence. Rugby, however, holds a special spot in his heart -- so much so that he admits that it costed him his marriage. As co-owner of the South Sydney Rabbitohs, a team that he grew up admiring, since 2006, Crowe has taken a hands-on approach to guide the club from the National Rugby League cellar to an annual contender.
