Toulon Surges, Pau Plummets In FloRugby Club Power Rankings

Stade Toulousain is still on top. But after another weekend of domestic rugby, the race behind Europe's No. 1 club is getting considerably more interesting.

RC Toulonnais demolished Section Paloise, Leicester made a statement against Northampton and Gloucester held Bath to just five points. Meanwhile, Edinburgh stayed perfect in the United Rugby Championship, and Union Bordeaux picked up another impressive road victory in France.

The latest results have reshaped this week's Top 15, with Toulon climbing six places, Pau tumbling out of the top 10 and Leicester entering the rankings for the first time.

The FloRugby Club Power Rankings compare clubs across the URC, Gallagher PREM and Top 14, weighing current form, opponent strength, away performances, European results and overall team quality. No league receives guaranteed spots, and movement is measured against last week's rankings.

No. 1 Stade Toulousain

Previous Ranking: No. 1

Toulouse keeps winning. Keeping opponents off the scoreboard? That's becoming a different conversation.

The defending Top 14 champion survived a 38-33 thriller against Perpignan, improving to 6-1 in domestic competition and maintaining its place at the top of the French standings.

But the defensive numbers are worth watching. Toulouse has conceded 107 points across its last three matches, including 40 against Exeter in the Champions Cup and 33 apiece against Bayonne and Perpignan.

That isn't the kind of dominance we've come to expect from Europe's top-ranked club.

Still, Toulouse has won those three matches, leads the Top 14 with 28 points and remains one of the most accomplished clubs in European rugby.

No. 1 stays in Toulouse. For now.

No. 2 Glasgow Warriors

Previous Ranking: No. 2

Glasgow isn't making things easy for itself. But the Warriors keep finding ways to get results.

A 24-20 victory at Benetton moved Glasgow to 3-0-1 in the URC, leaving the Scottish club unbeaten through four domestic matches and second in the standings with 18 points.

The four-point margin wasn't particularly convincing against a Benetton side struggling for results. But the Warriors' larger résumé remains one of Europe's strongest.

Glasgow already has a road victory over Munster, a draw against Ulster and a 47-27 Champions Cup demolition of Sale Sharks in England.

That European performance still carries considerable weight. Glasgow has demonstrated it can win domestically and deliver against quality opposition from another league.

The Warriors hold at No. 2, although Bordeaux is making the decision increasingly difficult.

No. 3 Union Bordeaux Begles

Previous Ranking: No. 4

Bordeaux is making a pretty convincing argument that last week's drop was temporary.

The defending Champions Cup winner went to La Rochelle and returned with a 25-19 victory, handing one of France's traditional heavyweights a home defeat.

It was Bordeaux's second consecutive Top 14 road victory after edging Clermont 23-22 earlier in October.

UBB is now 5-2 in the Top 14, sitting second behind Toulouse with 23 league points and a +70 point differential.

Its 36-36 Champions Cup draw at Gloucester also looks increasingly respectable after the Cherry and Whites dismantled Bath this weekend.

Bordeaux has demonstrated the ability to pick up difficult victories away from home, and its European pedigree remains unquestioned.

UBB climbs one place to No. 3, with Glasgow firmly in its sights.

No. 4 DHL Stormers Rugby

Previous Ranking: No. 3

The Stormers scored 52 points this weekend. Somehow, they still left us with defensive questions.

Cape Town's finest survived a 52-40 shootout against the Scarlets, improving to 3-1 in the URC and moving to 16 league points.

The attacking production was impressive. Allowing 40 points at home against the Scarlets was considerably less encouraging.

That performance came one week after the Stormers overwhelmed Bristol Bears 49-12 in the Champions Cup, one of the most dominant cross-league results of the European opening round.

The Stormers also own a 39-22 victory over the Sharks, although their earlier defeat to Edinburgh remains important when comparing the URC's leading clubs.

There's no question about the Stormers' attacking ceiling. The next challenge is finding the defensive consistency expected from a genuine European contender.

They slide one spot to No. 4.

No. 5 Vodacom Bulls Rugby

Previous Ranking: No. 7

The Bulls have scored 147 points in their last three matches. That's one way to get into Europe's top five.

Following a 57-15 victory over the Lions and a 56-20 Champions Cup demolition of Stade Français, the Bulls defeated Ulster 34-26 at Loftus Versfeld.

The latest victory wasn't nearly as emphatic as the previous two, but it pushed the South African club to 3-1 in the URC.

Through four domestic matches, the Bulls have scored 160 points while allowing just 80, giving them the competition's best point differential at +80.

That's an impressive response from a team that opened its URC campaign with a defeat to Munster.

The Bulls have now beaten opponents from South Africa, Ireland and France during their recent run.

Last season's URC finalist climbs two places to No. 5. Its early-season concerns are beginning to look like a distant memory.

No. 6 Gloucester Rugby

Previous Ranking: No. 8

Bath came to Kingsholm looking to stop the bleeding. Gloucester wasn't particularly interested in helping.

The Cherry and Whites held Bath to just five points in a 23-5 victory, producing one of the weekend's most impressive defensive performances.

Gloucester is now 3-1 in the Gallagher PREM, sitting first with 16 points and a remarkable +80 point differential.

That mark is particularly impressive considering Gloucester also has a 48-0 victory over Harlequins and a competitive 38-31 loss to Leicester on its domestic résumé.

And then there's Europe.

Gloucester went toe-to-toe with defending Champions Cup winner Bordeaux-Bègles in a 36-36 draw earlier this month, providing valuable evidence that its domestic success can translate against elite opposition.

The Cherry and Whites have demonstrated explosive scoring ability, defensive discipline and the capacity to compete with Europe's best.

Gloucester climbs to No. 6. A top-five breakthrough isn't far away.

No. 7 Leinster Rugby

Previous Ranking: No. 6

Leinster is looking considerably more like Leinster again.

The defending URC champion defeated Munster 24-18 in a heavyweight Irish rivalry, extending its winning streak across domestic and European competition to three matches.

That run includes a 29-5 victory over Cardiff and an impressive 48-23 Champions Cup triumph away at Clermont.

The Clermont result remains particularly significant. Winning by 25 points in France against Top 14 opposition is exactly the kind of performance that can reshape a club's early-season outlook.

But Leinster is still just 2-2 in the URC after opening its campaign with defeats against the Lions and Sharks.

Those early losses shouldn't be forgotten simply because the Irish powerhouse has rediscovered its form.

The Bulls' recent dominance earns them the top-five position this week, pushing Leinster down one spot despite another victory.

That says more about the competition near the top than it does about Leinster's long-term potential.

No. 8 RC Toulonnais

Previous Ranking: No. 14

Apparently, Toulon took last week's No. 14 ranking personally.

The French club demolished Section Paloise 41-20, delivering the biggest victory margin of the latest Top 14 round.

And it wasn't just another home win.

One week earlier, Toulon traveled to Edinburgh and defeated the previously unbeaten Scottish side 27-17 in the EPCR Challenge Cup.

Those are two significant results against clubs that have established themselves near the top of their respective domestic competitions.

Toulon's overall Top 14 record remains an imperfect 3-4, with the club sitting eighth in the table. That prevents an even more aggressive promotion.

But power rankings aren't simply league standings. They measure which teams are performing at the highest level right now.

And few European clubs have assembled a more convincing two-week résumé than Toulon.

The French side rockets six places to No. 8, the biggest climb among returning Top 15 teams.

No. 9 Edinburgh Rugby

Previous Ranking: No. 15

Four URC matches. Four wins. Edinburgh isn't showing much interest in slowing down.

The Scottish club defeated the Lions 31-10 at Hive Stadium, remaining the only team with four victories through four URC matches.

Edinburgh leads the competition with 19 league points, having scored 111 and conceded just 64 across its opening four domestic fixtures.

Its record also includes a victory over the Stormers, who sit above Edinburgh in these rankings because of their broader body of work and dominant Champions Cup performance.

That distinction matters.

Edinburgh suffered a 27-17 home defeat to Toulon in its Challenge Cup opener, providing evidence that its domestic dominance doesn't automatically translate into superiority against Europe's leading clubs.

Still, an unbeaten URC start, a victory over the Stormers and another convincing result against the Lions demand recognition.

Edinburgh jumps six places to No. 9. Its next challenge is showing that domestic consistency against more European opposition.

No. 10 Hollywoodbets Sharks

Previous Ranking: No. 9

The Sharks are collecting road victories. And that's a pretty useful habit to develop.

A 36-21 victory at Cardiff gave the South African side its third win in four URC matches, moving it to 15 league points.

The result followed a 40-33 Challenge Cup victory away at Lyon, giving the Sharks consecutive wins on European soil.

That's especially encouraging for a club that already owns a domestic victory over Leinster and has produced impressive attacking performances early in the season.

The Sharks' only URC defeat came against the Stormers, who won their South African derby 39-22.

There are still defensive concerns, particularly with the Sharks conceding 104 points through four league matches.

But three domestic wins and a European road victory provide a strong foundation.

The Sharks slip one position to No. 10 as Toulon and Edinburgh climb around them.

No. 11 Section Paloise

Previous Ranking: No. 5

Well, that escalated quickly.

One week after putting 41 points on Leicester in the Champions Cup, Pau found itself on the wrong side of a 41-20 scoreline against Toulon.

The 21-point defeat was a significant setback for a club that had climbed into Europe's top five.

Still, let's not completely rewrite Pau's season after one difficult afternoon.

Section Paloise is 5-2 in the Top 14, sitting third with 22 league points. Its 259 points scored lead the French competition through seven rounds.

And that 41-17 Champions Cup victory over Leicester remains an impressive result, particularly after the Tigers dismantled Northampton this weekend.

The problem isn't that Pau has suddenly become a poor rugby team. It's that several of its rivals have strengthened their cases while Pau suffered a damaging defeat.

The French club falls six places to No. 11, dropping outside the top 10 for the first time this ranking cycle.

No. 12 Montpellier Herault Rugby

Previous Ranking: No. 12

Montpellier is putting together one of the more interesting runs in European rugby.

The French club followed its 32-14 Champions Cup victory at Bath with a 20-17 Top 14 win away at Racing 92.

That's two consecutive road victories against opponents from different competitions.

Montpellier is now 4-3 in the Top 14, sitting seventh with 18 league points and a +44 point differential.

Its domestic record isn't quite as impressive as the clubs near the top of these rankings. But Montpellier has demonstrated the ability to win difficult matches away from home.

The victory at Bath remains particularly noteworthy, especially considering Montpellier held an attack that scored 48 points against Northampton to just 14.

Montpellier stays at No. 12. Another convincing performance could move the French club considerably higher.

No. 13 Leicester Tigers

Previous Ranking: Unranked

Leicester had already beaten Gloucester. Apparently, Northampton wanted a demonstration, too.

The Tigers dismantled the defending PREM champion 28-7 at Welford Road, producing one of the weekend's most convincing domestic victories.

The result moved Leicester to 3-1 in the PREM, level with Gloucester on 16 league points and sitting second in the standings.

The Tigers have now won three consecutive domestic matches after opening the season with a narrow defeat to Saracens.

And their record includes victories over both Gloucester and Northampton, two teams already established in the FloRugby rankings.

There is one considerable obstacle to Leicester's top-10 ambitions.

The Tigers suffered a 41-17 defeat at Pau in the Champions Cup, raising questions about how their domestic improvement translates against France's stronger clubs.

But a 21-point victory over Northampton is difficult to overlook.

Leicester enters the Top 15 at No. 13.

No. 14 Stade Rochelais

Previous Ranking: No. 10

La Rochelle was beginning to build momentum. Bordeaux brought that to an abrupt halt.

The two-time Champions Cup winner suffered a 25-19 home defeat against Union Bordeaux-Bègles, ending a three-match winning streak across domestic and European competition.

That run had included Top 14 victories over Clermont and Lyon, followed by a 31-14 Champions Cup win against the Lions.

Those performances suggested La Rochelle was recovering from an uneven opening to the season.

But Sunday's defeat was another reminder that the French club remains a work in progress.

La Rochelle is 4-3 in the Top 14, sitting fourth with 18 league points and a narrow +3 point differential.

That overall record is respectable, but less convincing than those of the leading French contenders.

La Rochelle drops four places to No. 14, with plenty left to prove.

No. 15 Northampton Saints

Previous Ranking: No. 11

One weekend, Northampton scores 71. Two weeks later, the Saints manage seven.

It's been that kind of start for the defending Gallagher PREM champion.

Northampton suffered a 28-7 defeat to Leicester, falling to 2-2 in domestic competition.

The result was particularly disappointing after the Saints appeared to be finding their rhythm with a 71-48 victory over Bath and a 28-12 Champions Cup win against Cardiff.

Those victories demonstrated Northampton's attacking ceiling and ability to produce results across competitions.

But the Leicester defeat exposed the inconsistency that has followed the Saints through their early domestic campaign.

Northampton has scored 163 points through four PREM matches, but also conceded 143.

That makes it difficult to place the Saints above teams producing more balanced performances on a consistent basis.

Northampton falls four places to No. 15, narrowly retaining its place in the rankings.

Just Outside The FloRugby Top 15

Munster Rugby (URC): A 24-18 defeat to Leinster knocks Munster out of the rankings despite its Champions Cup victory over Racing 92 and earlier domestic win against the Bulls.

Bristol Bears (PREM): Bristol moved to 3-1 with a 20-7 victory over Exeter, but its 49-12 Champions Cup defeat to the Stormers remains difficult to ignore.

LOU Rugby (Top 14): Lyon improved to 4-3 with a 31-27 road victory over Bayonne. Its recent Challenge Cup defeat to the Sharks keeps the French club outside the Top 15.
