Benetton Rugby enter 2026-27 as difficult to project. They finished 13th last season at 6-2-10 and 33 points, 21 points behind eighth-place Connacht, yet also beat eventual champion Leinster and went 5-1 in the Challenge Cup.
Wayne Pivac now replaces Calum MacRae, while Josh Flook and Isaia Walker-Leawere headline a recruitment class offset by the departures of Tommaso Menoncello and Thomas Gallo.

The prediction therefore cannot simply follow last year's table. Benetton possess playoff-caliber personnel and a proven home advantage, but their away record was disastrous.
The question is whether Pivac can turn a team with an established ceiling into one with a reliable enough floor to survive an 18-game URC season.
Why Benetton Should Climb
There is too much quality here to treat 13th as Benetton's natural level.
The back row is the clearest strength. Michele Lamaro, Lorenzo Cannone, Sebastian Negri, Manuel Zuliani and Alessandro Izekor give Pivac multiple combinations. Federico Ruzza and Niccolò Cannone already anchor the lock group, and Walker-Leawere adds the heavy second-row body Benetton sometimes lacked.
The backs also offer real variety. Jacob Umaga scored 96 URC points and 182 across all competitions last season. Louis Lynagh scored eight league tries, while Ignacio Mendy, Rhyno Smith, Matt Gallagher, Paolo Odogwu and Leonardo Marin provide different attacking profiles.

Flook cannot automatically replace Menoncello, but his defensive reading and positional intelligence address an important midfield need.
Then there is Monigo. Benetton went 5-1-3 at home last season, beating Glasgow, the Lions, Zebre, Ospreys and Leinster. Four of their first five URC games in 2026-27 are at home. That gives Pivac an opportunity to build confidence and table position before the schedule becomes harder.
Why The Playoffs Are Not Automatic
Benetton's upside case is persuasive. Their downside case is impossible to ignore.
They went 1-1-7 away last season and were outscored 293-124. Their only road victory came against Zebre. Remove that result and Benetton went 0-1-7 away, scoring 87 points and conceding 270.
Those were not merely close losses. Six of Benetton's 10 defeats came by at least 21 points, and they collected only one losing bonus. The problem was less about failing to close tight games than allowing bad passages to become blowouts.
That separates Benetton from the teams they are actually chasing. Cardiff, the Lions and Connacht finished between 54 and 55 points last season, while Ulster had 52. Benetton had 33. Even their 46 points in 2024-25 were insufficient for the playoffs.
International availability adds another risk. Benetton supply a substantial core to Italy, and 10 current players appeared in Italy's matchday 23 against New Zealand in July. The roster is deeper, but simultaneous absences can still stress lock, back row and midfield.
The Swing Factor: Can Benetton Travel?
No variable can move this prediction more than away performance.
Pivac does not need to turn Benetton into the URC's best road team. He needs to make them functional away from Treviso.
Last season's road failures occurred. Benetton lost at Connacht, Edinburgh, Ulster, Cardiff and Glasgow before being heavily beaten by the Sharks and Bulls in South Africa. That points to a structural problem rather than one brutal tour.
A modest transformation could change the standings. If Benetton turn some routs into losing bonuses and convert a couple of road defeats into wins, they can recover ground without becoming a different team.
Pivac's priorities make sense in that context. His expansive attack depends first on scrum, lineout, maul defense and defensive mentality. Those are the foundations Benetton need when hostile matches stop flowing their way.
If the road defense changes, this prediction may prove conservative.
Best-Case And Worst-Case Scenarios
The realistic ceiling is a top-six finish and a URC quarterfinal in which Benetton have a credible path toward the semifinals.
For that to happen, Monigo probably must become closer to a fortress, the new coaching structure must stabilize the defense, Flook must help absorb Menoncello's departure and Walker-Leawere must improve Benetton's physical matchups. Most importantly, Benetton need away victories outside Italy.

Europe could add another reward. Benetton return to the Challenge Cup after reaching the semifinals twice in the previous four seasons and the quarterfinal last year. Another semifinal is a realistic high-end outcome.
The downside is another finish around 10th through 13th. That becomes plausible if road collapses continue, international absences expose depth and an injury at a thin position such as fly-half or hooker becomes difficult to absorb.
A deep Challenge Cup run could also complicate the URC chase because knockout weekends collide with a difficult late-season stretch.
FloRugby's Benetton Rugby 2026-27 Prediction
Predicted Finish: 8th
Benetton are my pick to claim the final URC playoff position.
The realistic range is seventh through 11th, which reflects both the quality of the roster and how much improvement is required after a 33-point season. I would place Benetton in the same broad playoff fight as Cardiff, the Lions, Connacht, Ulster and the Sharks rather than alongside the established championship core of Leinster, Glasgow, the Stormers and Bulls.
Eighth assumes Pivac raises the defensive floor, Benetton remain strong at Monigo and their away performance improves from catastrophic to respectable. It does not require them to become a title contender immediately.
A top-six finish would make this prediction look too pessimistic and would indicate Pivac solved the road problem faster than expected. Another bottom-four finish would make it too optimistic and represent a serious failure after the coaching and recruitment investment.
The Challenge Cup offers the better trophy opportunity; another quarterfinal should be attainable, with a semifinal a credible upside.
Benetton's 2026-27 equation is simple. They have already demonstrated that they can beat playoff teams. They now must stop losing like a bottom-four team. Pivac has enough talent to accomplish that, but not enough evidence to justify projecting a dramatic leap into the URC's elite.
Eighth place, a playoff return and another meaningful European run is the most defensible preseason call for Benetton as Pivac begins his first campaign in Treviso. The talent is ready; consistency now has to follow every week.
