Glasgow are not rebuilding; they are trying to stay among the URC elite while changing important pieces of a contender. These five storylines will determine whether that retool produces another title challenge or creates a step backward.
Can Glasgow Finally Turn Regular-Season Superiority Into Knockout Silverware?
No storyline matters more because Glasgow proved almost everything else.
They finished the URC regular season first with 65 points, scored 72 tries and conceded a league-low 338 points. They went 9-0 at home and beat Leinster 38-17 at Scotstoun. In Europe, they went 4-0 in a pool containing Sale, Toulouse, Clermont and Saracens before beating the Bulls in the round of 16.
Then both trophy pursuits ended painfully.
Toulon beat Glasgow 22-19 in the Champions Cup quarterfinal after Glasgow had moved ahead 19-17. In the URC semifinal, Glasgow built a 21-3 lead over the Bulls after 25 minutes before losing 22-21.
Two narrow eliminations do not establish a permanent inability to close games. Smith also coached Glasgow to the 2024 URC championship. But late-game territory, discipline, substitutions and attacking accuracy become obvious areas to monitor after two elimination defeats by a combined four points.
Glasgow's 2026-27 challenge is not reaching the championship conversation. It is finishing it.
Who Takes Control Of The New No. 10 And Midfield Hierarchy?
Glasgow lost two players who shaped their backline in different ways.
Adam Hastings moved to Montpellier, removing the squad's most experienced established fly-half and a goal-kicking option. Huw Jones joined Toulon, breaking up his center partnership with Sione Tuipulotu and removing an elite outside strike threat.
Dan Lancaster has the strongest case to begin at fly-half because Smith started him at 10 in last season's URC quarterfinal. Charlie Savala, Matthew Urwin and new signing Bayley Kuenzle provide alternatives, but Glasgow entered preseason without a verified first-choice goal-kicking hierarchy.
At center, Stafford McDowall is the most proven candidate to partner Tuipulotu. His size and left-footed kicking create a different profile from Jones' acceleration and outside running.
That makes Tuipulotu more important as a carrier and secondary playmaker.

Jamie Ritchie arrives after a season with Perpignan carrying more than 60 Scotland caps, former national captaincy and 133 previous Edinburgh appearances. He brings breakdown quality, collision value and leadership rather than serving as a like-for-like Dempsey replacement.

Glasgow can surround him with Rory Darge and Matt Fagerson, while Gregor Brown, Euan Ferrie, Macenzzie Duncan, Ruwald van der Merwe, Angus Fraser and Ally Miller give Smith alternatives.
That depth makes the back row a safer transition area. The question is whether Ritchie's experience can help preserve championship-level forward performance while so much experience disappears elsewhere.

Nine academy players received professional contracts for 2026-27, the largest graduation class in Glasgow history.
For some clubs, that would be a long-term story. Glasgow may need the group immediately.
Scottish Rugby selected 19 Warriors in its June 2026 Nations Championship squad, although Dempsey has subsequently departed. Ritchie is another established Scotland international. Glasgow therefore remain exposed to international call-ups and player management.

Glasgow's 2025-26 home and away splits tell different stories.
At home they were perfect in the URC regular season, going 9-0 while outscoring opponents 316-119. Away they went 4-5 and were outscored 219-163.
The alarming stretch came in South Africa. The Lions beat Glasgow 54-12 before the Stormers won 48-12 one week later, producing a 102-24 aggregate score across the two matches.

That does not mean Glasgow cannot travel. They won away at Clermont in the Champions Cup and accumulated enough road victories to finish first in the URC.
The 2026-27 schedule turns last season's weakness into a potentially decisive storyline.
Glasgow finish the regular season with consecutive trips to the Bulls on May 8 and Sharks on May 15. If top-four positioning remains unsettled, home playoff advantage could depend on whether Glasgow can handle the environment that produced their worst performances last season.
That is a clean season-long test. Glasgow's championship ceiling is established. Their home strength is established. Their forward quality remains substantial. But a reworked contender cannot rely on Scotstoun alone.
If Glasgow settle the new backline, turn academy promise into usable depth, integrate Ritchie and become better closers and travelers, another championship run is realistic. If those questions remain unanswered, last season's No. 1 seed could find the URC considerably less forgiving.
