Now Franco Smith must reload after several major departures while integrating a record academy class.
That gives rugby fans three compelling reasons to follow Glasgow: unfinished championship business, a fascinating backline reinvention and a young generation being asked to matter immediately.
The No. 1 Seed Has Some Serious Unfinished Business
Glasgow were not merely playoff contenders last season. Over 18 URC rounds, they were the best team in the table.
The Warriors finished 13-5 with 65 points, scored 72 tries and conceded a league-low 338 points. At Scotstoun, they went 9-0 in the regular season and outscored opponents 316-119. They also demonstrated their ceiling by beating Leinster 38-17.
Europe delivered more evidence. Glasgow swept a Champions Cup pool containing Sale, Toulouse, Clermont and Saracens, earning the No. 2 knockout seed. They eliminated the Bulls in the round of 16 before Toulon beat them 22-19 in the quarterfinal.
Then came the URC semifinal.
Glasgow raced to a 21-3 lead against the Bulls after 25 minutes, with captain Kyle Steyn scoring twice. The Bulls came back to win 22-21. Combined with the Toulon result, Glasgow lost their two season-ending knockout matches by four total points.
That makes every close game this season worth watching. Glasgow have already shown they can dominate league play and beat European heavyweights. The next test is whether they can control the final quarter of the matches that decide trophies.
Smith coached Glasgow to the 2024 championship, so this is not a team searching for proof that it can finish the job. It is a proven champion trying to rediscover that finishing touch with a changed squad.
Glasgow Are Rebuilding Their Backline Without Rebuilding The Team
The most fascinating experiment in Glasgow is happening around Sione Tuipulotu.
Huw Jones has left for Toulon. Adam Hastings has joined Montpellier. Duncan Weir retired. Glasgow therefore enter 2026-27 without the established Tuipulotu-Jones center partnership and without their most experienced established fly-half from last season.
That is a lot of attacking familiarity to replace without changing the ambition.

Tuipulotu, Scotland’s captain, becomes even more important. His combination of carrying power and distribution allows Glasgow to create through the midfield rather than relying exclusively on their No. 10. Stafford McDowall is the most proven candidate to replace Jones at outside center, bringing size and a left-footed kicking option.
Fly-half is the bigger mystery. Dan Lancaster has the strongest recent big-match evidence after starting Glasgow’s 2025-26 URC quarterfinal at 10. Charlie Savala, academy graduate Matthew Urwin and new signing Bayley Kuenzle provide alternatives. Kuenzle’s ability to cover fly-half, center, wing and fullback gives Smith another way to manipulate combinations.

Fans should watch how those pieces connect. Glasgow’s forward and defensive foundations remain formidable. If the new 10-12-13 structure clicks, the Warriors can remain championship dangerous. If it does not, the departures may finally show.
A Record Academy Class Is About To Get A Real Stress Test
Glasgow promoted nine academy players to professional contracts for 2026-27, the largest graduating class in club history.
That would be interesting developmental news anywhere. At Glasgow, it has immediate competitive importance.

Hooker Seb Stephen has perhaps the clearest opening. Johnny Matthews and Grant Stewart both departed, leaving 24-year-old Gregor Hiddleston as the projected starter and Stephen, 21, with a credible route to substantial minutes after already gaining meaningful Champions Cup experience.
Fergus Watson scored and earned Player of the Match honors on his senior debut against Benetton. Johnny Ventisei, a former Scotland U20 captain, debuted at outside center in Glasgow’s 38-17 win over Leinster. Urwin arrives in the senior squad precisely when fly-half opportunities have opened.
The fun is discovering which one becomes indispensable before anyone expects it.
