The Vodacom Bulls Rugby enter 2026-27 carrying the strangest kind of pressure: sustained success without the trophy.
Pretoria finished fourth in the 2025-26 United Rugby Championship, survived a seven-match losing streak across competitions and still reached another Grand Final, only for Leinster to win 36-7. That made it four URC finals in five seasons without a championship.

Now Johan Ackermann begins his second season after losing four major contributors, while Springbok commitments, a demanding European schedule and unresolved set-piece questions complicate another title chase.
These are the five stories that will determine whether the Bulls remain the URC’s great nearly-team or finally finish the job.
Can The URC’s Serial Finalist Finally Become Champion?
“Can they contend?” has become almost meaningless. They already have.
The Bulls were runners-up in 2022, 2024, 2025 and 2026. Last season they demonstrated their resilience by recovering from a disastrous midseason stretch, winning their final six regular-season URC matches, crushing Munster 45-14 in the quarterfinal and overturning a 21-3 deficit to beat Glasgow 22-21 at Murrayfield.
Yet the final exposed the same ceiling as 2025. Leinster beat the Bulls 36-7 at Croke Park after winning the previous final 32-7.
That changes the standard. Another playoff appearance is expected; a quarterfinal exit would be a significant disappointment.
The Bulls do not need to prove they belong among the URC elite. They need to prove their power, attacking production and playoff experience can finally become championship control when the opponent is elite and the match is away from Pretoria.
Did The Bulls Lose Too Much Of Their Championship Foundation?
Wilco Louw, Ruan Nortjé, Kurt-Lee Arendse and David Kriel are not ordinary offseason departures.
Louw was an elite scrummaging tighthead. Nortjé was captain and a major lineout leader. Arendse provided Test-level speed and finishing. Kriel could solve problems across both centers, both wings and fullback. Together, they leave holes across the team.
The Bulls responded intelligently. Hanro Liebenberg returns from Leicester Tigers with leadership and lineout value. Curwin Bosch arrives from Brive to provide starting-caliber cover at fly-half and fullback. Former Munster back Thaakir Abrahams adds pace at wing or fullback. Tighthead Mawande Mdanda is a developmental bet at the position where Louw leaves the largest hole.
Pretoria added depth and flexibility without obviously replacing those four like-for-like.
Watch the scrum and lineout first. If those foundations remain championship quality, the Bulls can absorb the turnover. If they decline, the losses will reshape how Ackermann’s entire team functions.
Can Handré Pollard Help The Bulls Make Their Attack Travel?
The Bulls were devastating scorers in 2025-26. Their 566 regular-season points and 82 tries exceeded the totals of Glasgow, Leinster and the Stormers, the three teams that finished above them.
But location mattered enormously. The Bulls scored 358 points across nine regular-season matches at Loftus Versfeld and only 208 across nine away matches.
That makes Handré Pollard more than a famous Springbok. His most important job is helping the Bulls control matches when their attack cannot overwhelm opponents.
Pollard’s territory management, goal kicking and ability to turn set-piece pressure into points fit precisely what Pretoria needs in difficult knockout rugby. Embrose Papier, South Africa’s 2025-26 URC Player of the Season, supplies the running threat beside him, while Bosch gives Ackermann another tactical kicker when Pollard is unavailable.
The question is whether they can reproduce their Murrayfield control consistently. If Pollard can make their best rugby portable, playoff seeding becomes less decisive and their championship route expands dramatically.
Who Replaces Ruan Nortjé As The Pack’s Next Leader?
Replacing Nortjé is not simply a matter of choosing another lock.
His departure removes captaincy experience, lineout knowledge and more than 140 Bulls appearances from a pack already adjusting to Louw’s exit. Marcell Coetzee repeatedly captained the Bulls during last season’s decisive run and is the leading incumbent on-field captain, although no season-long captain had been officially announced by the research date.
More intriguing is Reinhardt Ludwig.

At 23, Ludwig has already received captaincy responsibility, can play lock or loose forward and now has a clear opportunity in the second row. JF van Heerden also has a larger pathway after Nortjé’s departure, while Cobus Wiese brings Springbok physicality.
Ludwig is the breakout candidate to watch because his opportunity extends beyond minutes. The Bulls need someone to become a dependable starting lock and assume greater lineout responsibility.
If Ludwig makes that jump, Pretoria may discover its next long-term pack leader while solving one of its most immediate championship problems.
Can The Bulls Survive A Season Their Best Team Rarely Plays Together?
The Bulls’ strongest XV looks formidable. How often will Ackermann have it?
Nine current Bulls were included in South Africa’s July 43-man group, while Papier returned to Test rugby in July. The URC opener against Zebre on September 26 overlaps with South Africa playing Australia in Perth the following day, and Munster away comes October 3.
Another squeeze arrives after the November international program. Nations Championship Finals Weekend runs November 27-29, and the Bulls return to URC action against the Lions on December 5. Recent precedent also shows mandatory Springbok rest can delay club returns.
Then the calendar becomes punishing. Between December and January, the Bulls move through matches in Johannesburg, Montpellier, Durban, Cape Town, Pretoria, Northampton, Benetton and Leinster.
That is why Bosch, Liebenberg and the broader recruitment class matter. The Bulls need enough depth to collect points without their ideal team and enough freshness to attack Europe without sacrificing URC seeding.
Their most plausible failure is not suddenly becoming bad. It is dropping just enough games during international and travel windows to finish fourth-to-sixth rather than top two, forcing another playoff route through hostile territory.
That connects all five stories. The Bulls know how to reach June. Whether they finally conquer it depends on replacing championship pieces, finding new leaders, making their attack travel and arriving at the decisive matches with enough of their best team intact.
For Pretoria, margins now define the chase.
