Four Finals, Zero Titles — The Bulls Are Chasing The One Thing They Cannot Win
There are contenders, and then there are the Bulls.
Since South African teams entered the URC, Pretoria has finished runner-up in 2022, 2024, 2025 and 2026. The Bulls have demonstrated almost everything required of a champion except becoming one.
Last season made the story even stranger. They endured a seven-match losing streak across the URC and Champions Cup, reorganized the coaching staff, then ripped off six consecutive league victories to finish the regular season. They hammered Munster 45-14 in the quarterfinal before producing an extraordinary semifinal comeback against Glasgow at Murrayfield, turning a 21-3 deficit into a 22-21 victory.
Then came Leinster.
The Bulls lost 36-7 at Croke Park, one year after Leinster beat them 32-7 in the 2025 final. The competition’s benchmark has twice made a perennial finalist look ordinary in the final.
That gives every major Bulls match context. Can they earn enough home playoff games to avoid another brutal road? Can Pollard turn their power into control when knockout rugby tightens? Can they finally beat a Leinster-caliber opponent when there is nowhere left to advance?

The Bulls Can Turn A Rugby Match Into A Track Meet
Do not mistake the Bulls for a team that simply scrums, mauls and waits for Pollard to kick penalties.
They scored 566 points and 82 tries during the 2025-26 URC regular season. Both totals exceeded those of Glasgow, Leinster and the Stormers, the three teams that finished above them. During their six-match winning streak to close the regular season, the Bulls posted 40, 34, 47, 23, 54 and 45 points.
Embrose Papier is one reason the attack is so entertaining. South Africa’s URC Player of the Season scored nine regular-season tries, supplied five assists, beat 25 defenders and made 15 clean breaks. Papier can punish defenders around the breakdown, changing what opponents must protect before the ball reaches the wider attack.
Then there is Canan Moodie, capable of playing outside center or wing and producing scores without perfect attacking conditions. Willie le Roux can provide another playmaking voice from fullback, while new signing Thaakir Abrahams arrives from Munster to inject pace into a back three that has lost Arendse.
The fun comes with danger attached. The Bulls conceded 406 regular-season points, considerably more than the three teams above them, and surrendered 181 across four Champions Cup pool matches.
So watch because points can arrive quickly — sometimes at either end.
Loftus Is A Superpower, And The Bulls Need To Make It Their Playoff Plan
The Bulls’ championship route may ultimately be geographic.
They went 7-2 at Loftus Versfeld during the 2025-26 regular season and 8-2 there when the quarterfinal is included. Their home attack generated 358 points across nine regular-season matches. Away from Pretoria, it scored 208 across nine.
That difference matters because recent Bulls history keeps producing the same question: where will the biggest playoff games happen?
At Loftus, the Bulls beat Leinster 39-31 last season and demolished Munster in the quarterfinal. Away from home, they proved something important by beating Glasgow at Murrayfield in the semifinal, but Croke Park brought another championship beating.

Pretoria therefore offers fans a season-long subplot hidden inside the standings. Every bonus point and every seemingly routine home game can affect whether Leinster, Glasgow or the Stormers eventually has to visit the Bulls, or whether Ackermann’s side must pack its bags again.
The roster turnover makes that chase harder. Louw’s departure threatens a previously dominant scrum, Nortjé leaves a lineout and leadership vacancy, and Springbok commitments could cost the Bulls important early-season continuity.
But that uncertainty makes Loftus even more important.
The Bulls already know they can reach a final. They know they can score. They know they can produce remarkable playoff comebacks. What they do not know is whether this version can engineer the route that finally ends differently.
Four finals have created the pressure. Eighty-two tries showed the entertainment value. Loftus may provide the solution. That is plenty of reason to watch again.
