What Has To Go Right For Northampton In 2026-27?
The defense has to become less expensive.
Northampton averaged 38.5 points scored per league match last season, but conceded 29.8. Bath, Leicester and Exeter all allowed significantly fewer regular-season points.
That matters because repeating a championship while routinely asking the attack to score into the 30s is difficult.
Jim Henry replaces Lee Radford in charge of the defense. If Northampton can tighten its connection and transition defense without slowing Sam Vesty's attack, the Saints become a stronger all-around side.
Did Northampton Saints Get Better This Offseason?
Not quite.
The first-choice XV remains championship quality, but the wider squad looks marginally weaker.
George Furbank's departure is the biggest loss. Northampton has also lost James Ramm, Tom James, Sam Graham and Elliot Millar Mills, reducing experienced depth and versatility.
Josh Taylor, Lefty Zigiriadis, Malik Faissal and Ion Neculai add useful options, while Alex Mitchell, Fraser Dingwall, Alex Coles, Trevor Davison and Craig Wright have been retained on new deals.
