Aviron Bayonnais enters 2026-27 trying to prove its 12th-place finish last season was a setback rather than a new reality. Only one year earlier, Bayonne finished fourth and reached the Top 14 semifinals.
The roster remains capable of far more than last season showed, and significant summer reinforcements have raised the intrigue. The Top 14 is streaming live on FloRugby in the United States.

Here are three reasons Bayonne should command attention as it attempts to return to the playoff race.
Can Bayonne Rugby Return To The Top 14 Playoffs?
Few clubs illustrate the volatility of the Top 14 better. Bayonne went from a 2025 semifinal to 12th place, an 11-15 record and a midseason coaching change.
There was enough attacking production — 94 tries and 747 points — to suggest this was not simply a talent problem. But Bayonne conceded 869 points, collected 29 yellow cards and two reds and went 2-11 away.
Gérard Fraser now enters his first preseason as head coach. If Bayonne can repair its defense, discipline and road form, a return to the top six is plausible.

Léo Coly Joins A Deep And Dangerous Bayonne Roster
Bayonne did not respond to 12th place timidly.
Scrum-half Léo Coly arrives from Montpellier and is positioned to become the new No. 9 following the departures of Maxime Machenaud and Baptiste Germain. Guillaume Cramont adds competition at hooker, while Brian Alainu'uese and Killian Géraci strengthen the second row.
Rob du Preez and Madosh Tambwe deepen a backline already featuring Sireli Maqala, Mateo Carreras and Tom Spring. Spring scored 13 league tries last season, while 23-year-old flanker Esteban Capilla scored 10 in only 16 appearances.
Stade Jean-Dauger And Bayonne's Home-Away Divide
Jean-Dauger remains central to Bayonne's prospects. The 14,800-seat stadium sold out throughout 2025-26, and Bayonne finished 8-4 there in Top 14 play.
But something changed during the season. Castres ended a nearly two-year Top 14 unbeaten run at Jean-Dauger in January, before Racing 92, Pau and Bordeaux-Bègles also won there.
More damaging was Bayonne's 2-11 away record. Restoring its home dominance while becoming respectable on the road may determine whether this is a playoff team or another lower-midtable finisher.
