The road to the 2026-27 Investec Champions Cup Final in Lyon officially began Friday as EPCR unveiled the four pools for the upcoming tournament, immediately creating several of the most anticipated club rugby matchups of the season.
The opening round of pool play is scheduled for Oct. 16-18, when Europe's elite clubs and South Africa's top contenders begin their chase for the continent's biggest prize.

Defending champion Union Bordeaux Bègles headlines Pool 3, while newly crowned domestic champions Leinster Rugby, Stade Toulousain and Northampton Saints each enter the competition as top seeds in their respective pools.
The draw also produced intriguing storylines across all four pools, including championship rematches, the arrival of a new South African contender and what could be the deepest group in this season's competition.
With several clubs undergoing major roster changes during the offseason, the Investec Champions Cup once again promises to feature many of the world's best players competing for European rugby's most prestigious club trophy.

Toulouse vs. Saracens Headlines Early Investec Champions Cup Storylines
One of the biggest matchups created by the draw is a renewed meeting between Stade Toulousain and Saracens.
The clubs met during last season's pool stage, where Saracens handed Toulouse one of its few defeats of the campaign. The rematch gives the reigning Top 14 champions an immediate opportunity to avenge that result while renewing one of European rugby's marquee rivalries.
Elsewhere in Pool 2, the Fidelity SecureDrive Lions will make their first-ever Investec Champions Cup appearance. Their qualification also marks another milestone for South African rugby, with Champions Cup matches set to be played in Johannesburg for the first time, potentially at the iconic Ellis Park Stadium.
Bordeaux vs. Stormers Could Produce A Blockbuster Champions Cup Clash
Pool 3 features what could become one of the tournament's most entertaining fixtures.
Defending European champion Union Bordeaux Bègles will square off with a DHL Stormers side expected to look significantly different from the one that reached last season's United Rugby Championship semifinals.
The Stormers are adding Springbok stars Siya Kolisi and Cheslin Kolbe, creating what many expect to be one of the strongest squads in world club rugby. A meeting between the reigning Champions Cup holders and a reloaded Stormers side could quickly become one of the marquee matches of the pool stage.
The pool also includes former European champion Munster Rugby alongside Racing 92, Bristol Bears and Gloucester Rugby, giving Bordeaux little margin for error.
Pool 4 Could Be The Toughest Group In The Investec Champions Cup
While every pool features quality, Pool 4 may stand above the rest.
Northampton Saints enter as Gallagher PREM Rugby champions after capturing the English title, while Bath Rugby arrives as the previous Premiership champion. The Vodacom Bulls have reached the last two United Rugby Championship finals, Montpellier finished as Top 14 runner-up last season and Stade Français Paris advanced to the Top 14 semifinals.
Cardiff also returns to the Investec Champions Cup as the lone Welsh representative in this season's tournament, giving Welsh supporters a club to rally behind after a difficult domestic campaign.
The headline fixtures could come quickly, with the Bulls facing both Northampton Saints and Bath Rugby during pool play in a series of matches that may have knockout-stage implications from the opening rounds.
As Round 1 approaches in October, the draw has already delivered compelling storylines that should make this one of the most anticipated Investec Champions Cup seasons in recent memory.
New Bonus Point Rule Changes In The Investec Champions Cup And EPCR Challenge Cup
Perhaps the most noticeable on-field change comes with the attacking bonus point.
Previously, clubs earned an attacking bonus by scoring four or more tries regardless of how many tries their opponent scored.
Beginning with the 2026-27 season, teams instead must finish a match with at least three more tries than their opponent to earn the attacking bonus point.
The losing bonus point remains unchanged, with teams still earning one bonus point for losing by seven points or fewer.
EPCR said the change follows the model already used in competitions such as the TOP 14 and is intended to encourage teams to continue attacking throughout the match instead of simply reaching four tries before shifting to a more conservative approach.
Champions Cup Round Of 16 Qualification Becomes More Competitive
The path to the knockout stage also has been tightened.
Under the previous format, the top four clubs in each of the four Investec Champions Cup pools automatically advanced to the Round of 16, while every fifth-place team dropped into the EPCR Challenge Cup knockout stage.
That safety net is gone.
Beginning in 2026-27, only the top three clubs in each pool automatically qualify for the Champions Cup Round of 16. The final four knockout places will instead go to the four highest-ranked remaining teams across all four pools, regardless of which pool they came from.
The next four highest-ranked clubs after that will qualify for the EPCR Challenge Cup Round of 16.
The change means finishing fourth in a pool no longer guarantees advancement, placing greater importance on every bonus point and every victory throughout pool play.
Tie-Break Rules Now Prioritize Victories
EPCR also adjusted how clubs will be separated when teams finish level on competition points.
Previously, points difference served as the primary tie-breaker.
Beginning this season, the greatest number of wins becomes the first determining factor before points difference and tries scored are considered.
The adjustment further reinforces EPCR's effort to reward winning matches over simply building large scoring margins.
Investec Champions Cup Returns To October In 2026-27
The European calendar also returns to a more traditional schedule.
After the 2025-26 competitions began in early December, the 2026-27 Investec Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup will kick off in mid-October.
The earlier start spreads the competition across a longer portion of the club season while restoring an autumn launch that many clubs and supporters had grown accustomed to before recent calendar adjustment.
