For most clubs, finishing 13th in the Top 14 standings would be viewed as a failure. For USA Perpignan, it has become something else entirely — another opportunity to prove it can survive when everything is on the line.
The Catalan club enters Sunday's Access Match against Provence Rugby in familiar territory. Once again, Perpignan finds itself fighting to preserve its place among French rugby's elite. Once again, the club must win a single match to avoid relegation.

The difference this year is the challenge awaiting them.
Provence Rugby arrives after one of the best seasons in club history and will enjoy home-field advantage in Aix-en-Provence. The Pro D2 side narrowly missed automatic promotion after falling 18-14 to RC Vannes in the division final and now has one last chance to secure a place in next season's Top 14.
For Perpignan, however, survival has become something of an art form.
Masters Of The Access Match
No club has navigated the modern Access Match better than Perpignan.
Since the playoff returned in 2018, USAP has repeatedly found a way to remain in the Top 14 when its future appeared uncertain. The club defeated Mont-de-Marsan in 2022 before earning back-to-back victories over Grenoble in 2023 and again in 2025. Each time, Perpignan entered under pressure. Each time, the club emerged with its Top 14 status intact.
Those results have given Perpignan a unique reputation within French rugby.
While most teams encounter the Access Match only once, Perpignan has developed institutional knowledge of the competition. Coaches, administrators and players understand the emotional demands of a winner-take-all fixture where an entire season can be redeemed or ruined in 80 minutes.
That experience could prove invaluable this weekend.
A Difficult Season Leads To Another Survival Fight
Perpignan's presence in the Access Match is hardly surprising considering how challenging the regular season became.
The club finished 13th in the standings with 29 points and struggled throughout the campaign. Perpignan scored 550 points while conceding 797, one of the league's poorest defensive records.
The season ended on a particularly disappointing note when Bayonne delivered a 52-7 defeat in Round 26.
While that result did little for confidence, it ultimately changed nothing. Perpignan's season was always likely to come down to the Access Match. Now the club has one final opportunity to ensure another year in the Top 14.
Provence Represents A Different Kind Of Threat
The challenge facing Perpignan is significantly different from previous survival battles.
Provence Rugby enters the match after accumulating 92 points during the Pro D2 season. The club scored 905 points, reached its first-ever Pro D2 Final and has spent much of the year proving it belongs among France's best second-division teams.
The home side also carries considerable momentum despite losing to Vannes in the final. Unlike Perpignan, which has spent weeks preparing for a survival fight, Provence arrives fueled by the possibility of history.
A victory would deliver the club's first promotion to the Top 14 and instantly transform the future of rugby in Aix-en-Provence. That combination of confidence, ambition and home support makes Provence one of the strongest opponents Perpignan has faced in an Access Match.
Experience Versus Ambition
Sunday's showdown ultimately comes down to one compelling question. What matters more: experience or momentum?
Perpignan has been here before. The club understands the pressure, the intensity and the unique demands of a match where everything is at stake.
Provence has never been closer to the Top 14. The club enters with one of the best seasons in its history and a fan base desperate to witness a historic promotion.
One side is attempting to protect its place among the elite. The other is trying to join them.
Perpignan's recent history suggests betting against the club in the Access Match is dangerous. Three consecutive survival victories have earned USAP the reputation of French rugby's ultimate escape artist.
But every streak eventually faces its toughest challenge. On Sunday, Perpignan will discover whether its Access Match dynasty can survive one more test.
