For much of the spring, the Top 14 championship race felt destined to come down to two teams.
Stade Toulousain, or Toulouse, entered the season chasing a fourth consecutive French championship and another place in rugby history. Union Bordeaux-Bègles emerged as the club most capable of stopping them, building on its first European title by capturing a second consecutive Investec Champions Cup crown and defeating Toulouse along the way.
Then Bordeaux never made the Top 14 playoffs.

The club's stunning 34-31 loss to Clermont on the final day of the regular season left the reigning European champion outside the postseason field entirely. Instead of preparing for a run at the Bouclier de Brennus, Bordeaux will watch from home as the Top 14 playoffs unfold.
That result changed the championship picture dramatically.
Not because Toulouse suddenly became the favorite, but because one of the few teams capable of matching the defending champions is no longer standing in the way.
Toulouse Remains The Team To Beat
Toulouse earned the No. 1 seed and a direct berth into the semifinals after finishing atop the regular-season standings.
The defending champions have won the last three Top 14 titles and now have an opportunity to become the first club in the professional era to win four consecutive French championships. Toulouse also owns a record 24 French titles and has spent years setting the standard in club rugby.
The last club to lift the Bouclier de Brennus other than Toulouse was Montpellier in 2022.
That history matters.
The path to the championship still runs through Toulouse, and every remaining contender knows it.
MHR Has Become The Hottest Team In Europe
If one club enters the playoffs with momentum capable of challenging Toulouse, it may be Montpellier.
MHR secured second place on the final day of the regular season to earn a direct semifinal berth, completing a remarkable few weeks for the club. In May, Montpellier captured the EPCR Challenge Cup and has continued that form into the Top 14 postseason.
Few teams in Europe have been playing better rugby over the past month.
The combination of recent silverware, a week off before the semifinals and the confidence that comes with winning meaningful matches makes Montpellier arguably the most dangerous challenger left in the field.
The club already knows what it takes to win a French championship.
Now it has an opportunity to do it again.
Don't Overlook Pau Or La Rochelle
While Toulouse and Montpellier command most of the attention, the rest of the playoff field brings compelling storylines.
Pau has been on the radar since the opening months of the season after spending time near the top of the standings. Although the club struggled to make an impact in the Investec Champions Cup, its domestic form remained strong enough to secure a home playoff match and one of the best seasons in recent club history.
La Rochelle arrives with a different source of motivation.
Like Bordeaux, La Rochelle captured back-to-back Investec Champions Cup titles, lifting European rugby's biggest prize in 2022 and 2023. Yet despite becoming one of the sport's premier clubs, La Rochelle has never won a Top 14 championship.
The opportunity to finally add a Bouclier de Brennus remains alive.
The Trilogy Will Never Happen
Perhaps the most surprising consequence of Bordeaux's elimination is what it removed from the postseason.
The past two seasons ended with Toulouse and Bordeaux meeting in the Top 14 Final. Those matches helped establish one of the defining rivalries in modern French rugby and created the possibility of a third consecutive championship showdown. The first match was a blowout by Toulouse. The second match was one of the best club matches ever.
A trilogy felt realistic.
Toulouse finished first. Bordeaux entered the final weekend as the reigning European champion. The pieces were in place for another chapter.
Instead, the rivalry will sit out this postseason.
There will be no third straight final, no rematch of recent championship clashes and no opportunity for Bordeaux to finally break through against Toulouse on French rugby's biggest stage.
The Road To The Title Is Clearer
The playoffs rarely unfold exactly as expected.
One injury, one bounce of the ball or one extraordinary performance can change everything. But Bordeaux's elimination has already altered the shape of the postseason.
It removed one of the few teams capable of matching Toulouse's talent. It ended any hope of a historic European and domestic double. And it guaranteed that the Top 14 will crown a champion without another Toulouse-Bordeaux final.
The defending champions remain the team to beat.
Now, with their biggest rival gone, the road to a fourth consecutive Top 14 title appears just a little clearer.
