Union Bordeaux-Bègles spent the past two seasons building one of the most impressive résumés in club rugby.
The French side captured back-to-back Investec Champions Cup titles, defeated many of the best teams in Europe and established itself as a legitimate powerhouse on the global stage. Yet despite all of that success, Bordeaux's season came to a shocking end on the final day of the Top 14 regular season.
The regular season being the key words as Bordeaux had reached the Top 14 Final the last two seasons.

A 34-31 home loss to Clermont on June 6 left Bordeaux outside the playoff field and ended any hopes of competing for the Bouclier de Brennus. For a club that entered the weekend believing it could challenge for both European and domestic titles, the result was one of the biggest surprises of the French rugby season.
The elimination was painful on its own, a drop kick in the final five minutes being the difference.
The larger story is that Bordeaux's quest for a first-ever Top 14 championship will continue for at least another year.

Bordeaux Won Europe's Biggest Club Competition
Bordeaux did not miss the playoffs because it lacked quality.
The club entered the final round as the reigning Investec Champions Cup champion and successfully defended its European crown in Bilbao. Along the way, Bordeaux defeated some of the strongest teams in club rugby and reinforced its reputation as one of the elite sides in the sport.
Few clubs entered the final Top 14 weekend carrying stronger credentials.
That is what makes the elimination so surprising.
The Champions Cup Run Was Historically Dominant
Bordeaux's title defense was about more than simply winning another trophy.
The club went undefeated throughout the Champions Cup campaign and recorded victories against some of Europe's most accomplished teams, including beating every reigning European domestic league champion (Toulouse, Bath and Leinster) in the playoffs. By the time the final whistle sounded in Bilbao, many observers viewed Bordeaux as the best club side in Europe.
The contrast between that achievement and missing the Top 14 playoffs is difficult to ignore.
One competition ended with a trophy. The other ended before the postseason even began.
Back-To-Back League Losses Changed Everything
The final-day loss to Clermont grabbed the headlines, but Bordeaux's playoff hopes were damaged before that match.
Consecutive league defeats against Toulon and Clermont ultimately proved costly in one of the tightest playoff races in recent memory.
A single additional victory would likely have been enough to secure a postseason berth. Early season losses largely caused by international play draining some of Bordeaux's best players wound up hurting Bordeaux just as much as the late season ones.
Bordeaux slipped to eighth place, barely sneaking in the Champions Cup field next season.
Louis Bielle-Biarrey Became A Global Star
Despite the disappointing ending, Bordeaux still produced one of rugby's biggest individual success stories.
Louis Bielle-Biarrey, who turns 23 on June 19 was named Investec Player of the Year after helping lead Bordeaux to another European title. The dynamic winger continued his rise as one of the sport's premier attacking threats and remains one of the brightest young stars in world rugby.
His season was worthy of silverware.
Bordeaux Still Have Never Won The Top 14
This is the statistic that defines the disappointment.
Bordeaux have won consecutive Investec Champions Cup titles. They have reached the upper tier of European rugby. They have developed international stars and become one of the most respected clubs in the game.
Yet they still have never won a Top 14 championship.
The Bouclier de Brennus remains the one major trophy missing from the club's collection. The last two seasons the have fallen to rival Toulouse, including one of the best club matches ever in the 2025 Top 14 Final.
That reality makes this elimination especially painful. Bordeaux had a realistic opportunity to chase both the Champions Cup and the Top 14 title this season, even as a wildcard team. Instead, the dream of a historic double disappeared before the playoffs even began.
For all of Bordeaux's European success, winning the French championship remains the final frontier.
And after Saturday's loss to Clermont, that wait continues.
