The BKT United Rugby Championship playoffs are down to four teams, but one side may be arriving at the semifinals with more momentum than anyone else. The Vodacom Bulls have quietly put together one of the strongest stretches of rugby in the competition and now find themselves just 80 minutes away from another URC final appearance.
While Glasgow Warriors secured the No. 1 seed and Leinster continue to command attention as defending champions, the Bulls have been building confidence week after week. Their quarterfinal performance against Munster Rugby was arguably the most dominant display of the opening playoff round, producing a convincing 45-14 victory at Loftus Versfeld.

Momentum matters in knockout rugby, and few teams can match what the Bulls have accomplished recently. They enter the semifinals on a six-game winning streak, having scored at least 23 points in every match during that run. Their attack has been clinical, their set piece reliable and their defense increasingly difficult to break down.
History also favors the Pretoria-based side. The Bulls have reached two previous URC semifinals and won both, defeating Leinster in 2022 and 2024 before advancing to the final. That experience could prove invaluable as they travel to Scotland to face a Glasgow team that will be carrying the pressure of the top seed.
The Form Team Remaining
No semifinalist enters the weekend in better form than the Bulls.
Since the end of March, the South African side has reeled off six consecutive victories. The run began with a 34-31 win over Munster before comfortable victories over Dragons RFC, Scarlets, Zebre Parma and Benetton Rugby. They then completed the sweep by dismantling Munster 45-14 in the quarterfinals.
The numbers are impressive. During the winning streak, the Bulls scored 248 points while conceding just 111. They averaged more than 41 points per game across their last three matches alone.
While Glasgow, Leinster and the Stormers have all suffered setbacks over the same period, the Bulls have steadily improved each week.
Handre Pollard Brings Big-Match Experience
Every championship contender needs a reliable game manager, and the Bulls possess one of the best in the competition.
Handre Pollard finished the regular season with 120 points, third-most in the URC. His ability to control territory, convert opportunities and manage pressure situations gives the Bulls a significant advantage in tight playoff contests.
Pollard's experience at the highest levels of international rugby also makes him one of the most dangerous players remaining in the tournament. When knockout matches become tactical battles, few fly-halves are better equipped to dictate proceedings.
The League's Most Explosive Try Scorers
The Bulls have not relied solely on their kicking game to reach the semifinals.
Scrum-half Embrose Papier finished the regular season with 11 tries, second-most in the entire URC. Hooker Johann Grobbelaar added nine tries, while Cheswill Jooste, Harold Vorster, Marcell Coetzee and Willie le Roux each crossed five times.
That balance makes the Bulls difficult to defend. Opponents cannot focus on a single attacking threat because scoring opportunities can come from forwards, backs and set-piece situations.
Their quarterfinal victory over Munster demonstrated exactly how dangerous that attack can be when opportunities arise.
A Team Comfortable on the Road
The biggest concern for South African teams in northern-hemisphere playoffs is often travel.
However, the Bulls have already shown they can win away from home. They claimed victories in Wales against Dragons RFC and Scarlets during their recent winning streak and have previous playoff experience outside South Africa.
While their overall record in Scotland is not ideal, they have won two of their eight visits there, including a 26-19 victory over Glasgow at Scotstoun in April 2025.
Knowing they have already beaten the Warriors on Scottish soil could provide an additional boost heading into Murrayfield.

Unlike many teams that are still searching for postseason success, the South Africans have become regular contenders in the URC era. Their perfect semifinal record speaks for itself.
Glasgow will enter as favorites thanks to home advantage and their No. 1 ranking, but the Bulls possess a combination of form, experience and attacking firepower that few teams can match.
If they continue playing at the level they showed against Munster, they may be the most dangerous team left in the race for the URC title.
