The top two teams in Japan Rugby League One collide Sunday in what many viewed as a championship-caliber matchup long before the playoffs began.
Kubota Spears and Saitama Wild Knights have been among the competition's dominant forces all season, and now one of them will see their title hopes end with a semifinal showdown at Prince Chichibu Memorial Stadium.

The matchup has all the ingredients of a classic.
Kubota finished atop the table, while Saitama secured second place, with only one position separating the teams entering the postseason. Recent meetings have been fiercely contested, including a dramatic 32-30 Wild Knights victory earlier this season and a 29-29 draw last year.
While Saitama owns a 3-1-1 advantage across the last five meetings, every contest has carried playoff intensity.
Saitama enters the semifinal with four wins in its last five matches and one of the most balanced lineups in Japanese rugby.
The Wild Knights boast international stars throughout the squad, including Damian de Allende and Jack Cornelsen, while Lachlan Boshier continues to anchor a physical forward pack. Their recent 45-0 victory over Mitsubishi Sagamihara Dynaboars showcased the type of form that makes them one of the favorites to lift the trophy.
