The second Japan Rugby League One semifinal arrives at 1:05 a.m. ET on May 31 with a familiar rivalry taking center stage as Saitama Wild Knights face the Kubota Spears.
Few rivalries in Japanese rugby have carried more postseason significance over the past several years. The Spears stunned the Wild Knights in last season’s semifinals before pushing defending champions Toshiba Brave Lupus Tokyo to the limit in the championship match.

Now the two clubs meet again with another spot in the final on the line.
The Wild Knights remain one of the most talented teams in Japan despite several painful playoff exits in recent years. Damian de Allende, Marika Koroibete and Dylan Riley continue to anchor a roster loaded with international experience and attacking firepower.
The emergence of fullback Kyohei Yamasawa has also changed the shape of the Wild Knights attack. Yamasawa finished last season as the league’s top point scorer and established himself as one of Japan’s premier playmakers during a breakout campaign.
Still, the Wild Knight's playoff failures continue to hang over the club. The Wild Knights have now fallen short in three straight postseason campaigns despite consistently finishing near the top of the standings.

Kubota Spears, meanwhile, look increasingly comfortable in the role of championship contender. The Spears arguably possess the strongest forward pack in Japan Rugby League One behind Springboks hooker Malcolm Marx and a defensive structure engineered by former All Blacks assistant Scott McLeod.
Kubota’s defense was one of the defining strengths of last season.
The Spears conceded just 421 points across 21 matches and repeatedly frustrated some of the league’s most explosive attacks. That defensive edge proved critical during last year’s playoff upset over the Wild Knights.
Kubota survived a tense semifinal 28-24 before eventually losing the final to Toshiba Brave Lupus by just five points.
Now the Spears return with even more experience and another dangerous attacking weapon in former All Black Shaun Stevenson. The matchup between Saitama’s explosive backs and Kubota’s physical defensive system could determine the outcome.
If the Wild Knights can finally solve Kubota’s defensive pressure and avoid another late-game collapse, they have enough talent to return to the championship game. If not, the Spears may once again prove they are the team best equipped to challenge Brave Lupus for theJapan Rugby League One crown.
