Japan Rugby League One’s playoff semifinal round begins Friday night with one of the most star-studded matches in world club rugby as Kobe Steelers face Tokyo Sungoliath at 11:05 p.m. ET on May 29.

The matchup at Prince Chichibu Memorial Rugby Ground in Tokyo features global stars all across the field, including Ardie Savea, Brodie Retallick, Cheslin Kolbe and Sam Cane in a game that could decide who has the best chance to dethrone defending champions Toshiba Brave Lupus Tokyo.

Kobe Steelers enter the semifinal carrying momentum after steadily climbing into title contention under former Wallabies coach Dave Rennie. The Steelers reached the playoffs last season before falling heavily to Toshiba Brave Lupus in the semifinals, but the addition of Savea and Anton Lienert-Brown has dramatically raised expectations around the club.

Savea’s return to Japan is one of the defining storylines of the postseason. The former World Rugby Player of the Year already proved during his first Japan Rugby League One stint that his explosiveness translates perfectly to the Japanese game. Kobe now hopes the All Blacks star can carry them one step further toward a championship appearance.

Retallick remains equally important. The veteran second row continues to perform at an elite level and has become one of the league’s most effective forwards near the try line, helping transform Kobe into one of the competition’s most dangerous attacking teams.

Kobe Steelers Need More From The Defense

Still, the Steelers’ biggest concern remains defense.

Kobe conceded 30 or more points repeatedly over the past three seasons and were overwhelmed by Brave Lupus in last year’s semifinals. That issue becomes especially dangerous against a Sungoliath side capable of scoring quickly from anywhere on the field.

Tokyo Sungoliath survived a dramatic quarterfinal win over Ricoh Black Rams Tokyo to reach the semifinals after edging their rivals 40-35.

Much of the Sungoliath’s attack revolves around Springbok superstar Cheslin Kolbe.

Kolbe became increasingly influential as last season progressed and helped drag Sungoliath into the playoffs with several match-winning performances.

Consistency Key For Sungoliaths

The problem for Sungoliath has been consistency.

Despite possessing one of the league’s deepest rosters, Tokyo Sungoliath have struggled to keep pace with Brave Lupus, Kubota Spears and the Wild Knights in recent playoff runs.

Now they face a Kobe side loaded with international experience and motivated by another chance to reach the final.

The semifinal also carries major emotional significance for Savea, whose move back to Kobe instantly shifted the balance of power in League One. The All Blacks star has openly embraced the physical style and passionate crowds in Japan, and another dominant playoff performance would further cement his growing legacy in the competition.

With Kolbe’s speed facing Kobe’s powerful forward pack and Sungoliath’s veteran core trying to hold off one of the league’s most ambitious challengers, Friday night’s semifinal could easily become the best match of the Japan Rugby League One postseason.
