The TOP 14 playoff race is crowded, but not every dangerous team is sitting at the very top of the table.

Some clubs are dangerous because of elite attacking numbers. Others are built around defense, experience or momentum entering the final rounds of the regular season.

That is what makes the TOP 14 postseason so difficult to predict every year. The teams outside the top two often are capable of beating anyone on the right day.

With two rounds left in the regular season, these are the teams nobody will want to see once the playoffs begin.

Montpellier Hérault Rugby

Montpellier already know how to win knockout rugby this season.

Their EPCR Challenge Cup final victory over Ulster last week gives them momentum and belief entering the final stretch of the TOP 14 season. They also own the best defensive record in the league, conceding just 544 points through 24 matches.

That combination is dangerous in playoff rugby.

Montpellier may not attack with the same explosiveness as Toulouse, but knockout matches often are decided by discipline, territory and defensive control. Montpellier have shown they can win games in exactly that style.

Stade Français Paris

Stade Français may be the least talked-about contender near the top of the standings.

They sit fourth with 73 points and have scored 809 points this season, the second-best attacking mark in the TOP 14 behind only Toulouse.

What makes Stade Français dangerous is balance. Their +193 points differential is among the best in the league, and they have consistently stayed near the top despite attention flowing toward Toulouse, Montpellier and Bordeaux-Bègles.

That makes them the kind of team capable of surprising opponents once the playoffs begin.

Racing 92

Racing 92 are still outside the playoff places, but few clubs would want to face them in a win-or-go-home match.

Their season has been inconsistent, but Racing still have scored 756 points and remain alive in the postseason race heading into a crucial clash with Clermont.

There is also less pressure on a team chasing from seventh place. Racing essentially are playing knockout rugby already, and that urgency can become an advantage late in the season.

If Racing qualify, they immediately become one of the most dangerous lower-seeded teams in the field.

ASM Clermont

Clermont sit sixth entering Round 25, but they remain capable of disrupting the playoff picture.

They have scored 742 points and own a +51 points differential despite playing through one of the tighter races in the table.

Their match against Racing 92 on May 31 may be one of the most important fixtures left before the postseason begins. A win would strengthen their playoff position, while a loss could drag them back into the chaos.

That pressure creates intensity, and clubs battle-tested in matches like that often become difficult postseason opponents.

Section Paloise

Pau no longer qualify as a surprise.

They are third in the table with 73 points and 16 wins, trailing only Toulouse in total victories this season. Their rise has been one of the biggest stories in the TOP 14 campaign.

Now comes the harder part: proving they can handle playoff pressure.

Their upcoming clash with Montpellier is massive because it gives Pau a chance to show they belong among the league’s true title contenders.

If they pass that test, nobody will dismiss them once the postseason arrives.
