Dan Thomas didn’t arrive at Cardiff Rugby looking for a quiet finish to his career.
After seven years with Bristol Bears, the veteran flanker moved to Wales in the summer of 2024 searching for a new challenge — and instead became one of the most important defensive players in the URC.
Thomas finished the regular season with 248 tackles, the most of any player in the league, while also recording 17 turnovers, the second-highest total in the competition.
It’s why his teammates voted him Cardiff Rugby’s Players’ Player of the Season.

“I have always prided myself on working hard and doing the things that don’t require talent well,” Thomas said. “At the end of the day, rugby is a simple sport. As long as I do my bit right, that’s all that matters.”
That work ethic helped Cardiff reach the URC playoffs for the first time in years.
Thomas quickly became central to Cardiff’s identity — physical, relentless and willing to grind through ugly stretches of matches. While players like Josh Adams and Callum Sheedy provided finishing and points, Thomas became the heartbeat of the forward pack.
“I didn’t come here to cruise,” he said. “I came here to push myself, to play rugby and have a smile on my face.”
At 32, Thomas has embraced the grind of the modern URC, from trips to South Africa to massive Welsh derbies.
“There are no excuses,” he said ahead of Cardiff’s quarterfinal trip to Cape Town. “As long as your mentality is up there, your body will catch up.”
Now Cardiff heads into the playoffs against the DHL Stormers as a dangerous underdog after beating them 22-16 in the final round of the regular season.
For Thomas, the formula won’t change.
Work hard. Tackle everything. Keep showing up.
It’s not flashy, but this season it helped turn Cardiff into a playoff team.
