Henry Pollock To Start As Maro Itoje Brings Up 100 England Appearances
Henry Pollock earns first England start as Steve Borthwick reshapes pack for Ireland clash, with Maro Itoje set for 100th Test cap at Allianz Stadium.

England have handed Henry Pollock his first Test start as Steve Borthwick makes three changes for Saturday’s Guinness Six Nations showdown with Ireland at Allianz Stadium.
The 21 year old Northampton Saints forward, capped seven times from the bench, will start at No.8 in a reshaped back row following the 31 - 20 Calcutta Cup defeat to Scotland. Pollock comes into the side alongside Tom Curry, who starts at blindside flanker, while Ben Earl shifts to openside.

Curry and Pollock had formed part of England’s bench impact unit through the opening two rounds, but Borthwick has opted for a more direct response after a performance at Murrayfield that drew widespread criticism. Guy Pepper and Sam Underhill drop to the bench as England seek greater balance and physical edge from the outset.
Pollock was one of the few bright notes in Edinburgh despite playing only the final 25 minutes. Only Earl and Freddie Steward carried for more metres, and Pollock’s turnover near his own line underlined the energy and intent he brought to a side that struggled for cohesion. The British and Irish Lion now has the opportunity to translate that impact into an 80 minute display against an Ireland pack renowned for its breakdown accuracy and phase control.
The only other change to the starting XV sees Ollie Lawrence make his first appearance of this Championship at outside centre. Tommy Freeman moves back to the wing after Borthwick paused the experiment of deploying him in midfield, with Tom Roebuck dropping out of the squad. Henry Arundell, cleared to play after his two yellow cards against Scotland were deemed sufficient punishment by an independent disciplinary panel, continues on the opposite flank.
Maro Itoje captains the side on the occasion of his 100th England cap, becoming one of a select group to reach the milestone. Borthwick paid tribute to his lock.
“To reach 100 caps for England is a remarkable achievement and speaks volumes about Maro’s consistency and professionalism over many years,” Borthwick said.
“He leads through his actions every day, sets the standard for others and cares deeply about representing his country. We’re all incredibly proud of what he has achieved, and I know it will be a special day for him and his family.
“We’re expecting a huge contest at Allianz Stadium and we’re excited for it. We know the challenge Ireland will bring and we’ve selected a side that we believe has the right balance to meet it.”
England have retained their 6 to 2 bench split despite scrutiny in the wake of the Scotland loss. Jack van Poortvliet replaces Ben Spencer as scrum half cover, while Marcus Smith comes in for Fin Smith as the second back option. Jamie George, Bevan Rodd, Trevor Davison, Alex Coles, Pepper and Underhill complete the replacements.
