Gloucester enters Round 4 desperate for momentum. The English side has not won since opening the Champions Cup with a home victory over Castres and is riding a five-match losing streak across league and European play. 

Narrow defeats on the road to Munster and Edinburgh, including a 26-24 loss in Round 3, have left Gloucester needing a win to remain alive in either the Champions Cup or Challenge Cup. 

Despite sitting 10th in the Gallagher PREM Rugby table, the opportunity for a surprise European run still exists if results fall their way.

Toulon arrives with its own high-stakes motivations. 

The Top 14 contender beat Munster 27-25 in Round 3 and sits within striking distance of Bath Rugby and Edinburgh atop the pool. However, Toulon’s road form has been a significant concern, as the club has not won away from home since a Sept. 6 victory over Montpellier in Round 1 of the Top 14 season. 

With Toulon also just three points clear of both Munster and Gloucester, a loss at Kingsholm combined with results elsewhere could eliminate the French side from the Champions Cup altogether. 

The volatility of Pool 2 ensures that this matchup carries consequences far beyond a single result.
