Champions Cup Pool 1 Match To Watch: Glasgow Warriors vs. Saracens

Lock, stock and barrel. That is the only way to describe what fans can expect to witness when the high-flying Glasgow Warriors welcome Premiership powerhouse Saracens to Scotstoun Stadium.

Each vanquisher of perennial power Toulouse so far in the pool stages, Round 4's clash is for all the marbles, with both sides targeting the top spot in the pool.

For Glasgow, a win of any kind almost certainly will secure a top-2 spot in the overall knockout seedings, and with it, a home run through to a potential semifinal.

On the other side of the ledger, Saracens knows that a bonus-point win, while denying the Warriors any log points, would in all likelihood see Saracens top the group, working on the premise that Toulouse gets back on track with a win over a powerful Sale Sharks team at home.

Reflecting on each side’s respective victory over Toulouse, one common thread rang true. Disrupting the French side’s flow at the set-piece and breakdown nullified the effect of Antoine Dupont on the contest.

In this respect, the clash up front once again will be fierce, with a pair of Lions locks dominating the line-outs. Maro Itoje will be leading Saracens, and Scott Cummings will be spearheading the Warriors' aerial assault.

At the breakdown, both sides are stacked with turnover merchants, none more so than Saracens No. 8 Tom Willis, who has been in scintillating form of late. He pinched a pair of decisive turnovers and has dominated the contact point on both sides of the ball, all while carrying what appeared to be a very uncomfortable back.

The England international’s head-to-head with Scotland international Jack Dempsey is worth the admission alone.

In the back line, the Warriors hold the edge in terms of players at the peak of their powers, with Sione Tuipulotu, Huw Jones and Kyle Steyn all being in career-best form.

Franco Smith’s side, however, knows it will not be facing a pack of slouches, with Sarries boasting an experience-laden back line with the likes of Elliot Daly, Owen Farrell, Nick Tompkins, Max Malins, Alex Lozowski and co., all being seasoned internationals.

Mix in the stardust of Scotland fly-half Fergus Burke and budding superstar Noah Calouri, and one gets a clear picture of a back line that is capable of dominating opponents.

So what does this all mean?

Well, for one, fans are set to be treated to what on paper is the biggest clash of the weekend, which will be streamed live on FloRugby.

But on a more nuts-and-bolts level, this clash presents an intriguing tactical battle.

On one hand, Saracens will look to lock the Warriors into an arm wrestle, backboned by a stingy defense and a multifaceted kicking game.

Now, this is not to say the Warriors cannot win a match of this nature, as they certainly have the firepower to do so. However, there is no doubt that if the match were to get more expansive, then the home side would hold a clear advantage.

In terms of star power, as noted above, this clash does not lack one iota. Pinpointing one player per team is a major challenge, but that is what we have been tasked with.

Kicking things off with the home side, Scotland captain Sione Tuipulotu has enjoyed an extraordinary rise from Australian afterthought to one of the best players in professional rugby.

Dovetailing beautifully with Jones to form a truly world-class center partnership, the former Melbourne Rebel is the heartbeat of the Warriors squad. Utterly dominant in defence, blessed with a box of tricks David Blaine would be proud of and an inspirational personality his teammates feed off, Tuipulotu has risen to be as important as Finn Russell to his nation’s international success.

Down south, Maro Itoje is the key star in a Saracens side that is yearning for a return to the top table in the Champions Cup. Closing in on 100 test caps for England, to go along with his nine British and Irish Lions test caps, Itoje already is cemented as a modern great.

Operating as a key player in the Champions Cup winning squads of 2015-2016, 2017-2018 and 2018-2019, Itoje knows what success looks like at Saracens. Now back to his best form, the 31-year-old knows time is of the essence for his squad.

Rugby fans in the United States will not want to miss this clash of two European rugby titans Sunday at 5:30 p.m. local time/12:30 p.m. Eastern.
